Drawing It Out [Solo]

In which Hilana and Athalia practice Scrivening.

The Luxium represents the upper half and primary seat of the Solunarian Capital and one of the dual-cities that comprises Solunarium Proper. Situated between the foot of the volcanic Mount Sorokyn and the wide River Vasta, this above-ground metropolis boasts five thriving districts beneath the shadow of the glorious Palatium Furiarum (The Blazing Palace) from which the Solar Court rules in splendour. This bustling metropolis is by far the most populous region in the realm and, along with its shadowy sister-city the Umbrium, houses upwards of eighty percent of the Solunarian population at any given time. During the reign of a Solar Court, every major government agency in the kingdom is headquartered in the Luxium, with the notable exception of The Silver Sentinels, the covert intelligence agency run by the House of Phaedryn-Sol’Aværys.

The sisters Chenzira were sitting at the table in the kitchen, spellwright's ink and parchment in front of them. Where Hilana had parchment to work with, Lia, however, was using fabric. She could paint the designs - and pictographs - directly onto the textile. In this case, it was cotton, and it was one of her sister's voluminous skirts. She was working with one that had been dyed recently, dipped in such a way to make an ombre of red from the hem, fading up to white at the hip. The ink would go on black, she knew, and this allowed her to make the skirt look that much more decorative while she focused on the pictographs. The fabric was trapped in a larger than normal embroidery hoop in order to make sure it was tight and wouldn't bunch up, lest the brush strokes fail and make it look not quite as nice as Lia wanted it to. She would draw a design of chrysanthemums, and work her pictographs within it. She had been reading a bit about the symbolism behind flowers, and she knew it might well please Hilana.

They were working in mostly companionable silence. Hilana's task for Scrivening today was to work on diverting energy and capturing it so that it would prevent a glass container from shattering. Sure, it could be warded with Negation, but Hilana did not possess that Rune, and she wanted to work on something that she could pull off herself. This seemed like an interesting practice lesson, and the theory behind it seemed solid enough. It was just going to be a matter of aligning the pictographs just so, and understanding what her design was going to be. The beautiful thing was that she could work it in flowers; there were endless examples in her books and in her own head of them. Besides, her putting flowers on jars was very much a Hilana sort of thing to do.
