It was interesting to fight against new weapons as Thimryl was realizing how this staff was used. It was like a spear without the spearhead and he could tell the human had some form of training with it. He was learning much from their exchange, the weapon's reach, how it could block and, in the same motion attack as well. It truly fascinated Thimryl to experience this.

Reacting to the incoming blow, he would pull back from his initial strike to parry the coming sweep of his legs, catching the staff as it came up to hit him. He would match Thimryl move for move as best he could, resisting the urge to rely on his reaving. It was weird to him, fighting without using his reaving, but it was also good for him to know what it was like to not rely so heavily on the magic. It made him want to know more about blending the two together. As they gave each other a quick round of exchanges, Torin needed a moment to catch his breath, allowing Thimryl to take a breather of his own, plopping down on the cool training floor.

"I must say you have quite the handle on the staff. I've never faced an opponent who uses that kind of weapon before, so I'm grateful for the experience." he noted through panted breaths as he watched Torin. "Where did you learn to wield such a weapon? I assume your technique comes from the use of your hammer?" he asked, curious as to where, if he were ever given the opportunity to travel, one could learn to wield such a weapon.

The human shrugged a shoulder at the compliment. It was nice to hear it from someone else. His friends complimented him but they were all far better than he was in the martial arts, so it was hard to believe. Thimryl was fair with his weapon, just as Torin was, so it was somehow easier to believe the compliment from him.

"You're good too," He returned it, adding, "But that isn't the weapon you're used to using, is it?"

Sitting down on a bench near the elf he answered the questions honestly.

"I learned in Kalzasi, that's where I'm from." He waited a moment to see if this would get any negative comment before continuing.

"I learned from a weapons master with Reaving initially, but also from several other teachers who used knives, swords of various sizes, even staffs once in a while. I use a hammer staff at home but it isn't like working with a forge hammer, the balance is so different."

Running a hand through his golden hair, he stared at the ground, wondering if his style had been influenced by the array of different teachers he'd had. Mind still on home, he grinned,

"Even my apprentice is better than I am now. I don't have a lot of time to spend practicing, but I try to do at least a few sessions a season to keep in shape for it."

He was strong, but that wasn't the same as being able to fight. Thimryl's body was probably better suited to it than Torin's, even if the human would look more intimidating initially.

"How long have you been a solider?" He didn't know of any major wars that Sol'Valen had participated in, in the last few years, but his knowledge was limited. Reaching over he offered his waterskin to Thimryl, in case he too was thristy.

A smile came over his elven features as he rolled over to his stomach, watching the young man as he rested for the moment. "It's the only weapon I've known. Swords have been what I trained with since I could pick up a weapon." he noted, materializing his pact weapon to show it to the human. It was shown with an umbral aura that opaquely cloaked the blade as it soon was dematerialized from view.

Opalescent green eyes looked on with genuine intrigue as Torin gave insight into his martial training. Thimryl wondered if there were many masters of Reaving in Kalzasi. He would be lying to himself if he said he wasn't intrigued to go there and find other Reavers like himself. The prospect was intriguing for sure, but he wasn't sure if he would ever get that chance, not now at least. It sounded like Kalzasi was full of venerable fighters and that excited him. When asked how long he had been a soldier, Thimryl sat up, taking the waterskin for a quick sip.

"For a few years, but not long enough to have real combat experience. There is no place on Ransera that is as safe as Sol'valen." he noted, taking a sip before handing it back to the man. "I think if I ever get the chance to leave Sol'valen, I'll travel to see the world outside the Phoenix King's safety. Maybe I'll come spend some time in Kalzasi too." he mused, coming to stand on his feet and brush off the dust and dirt of the arena floor. "Have you ever tried to wield any weapon other than your hammer staff?"

The idea of never practicing with other weapons seemed odd to the human with his eclectic martial education. But all of Sol'Valen seemed to be organized around a more precise social structure than Kalzasi did. Traveling was beginning to make Torin realize that the home he had grown up in was perhaps not as cohesive as other governing structures. Particularly considering the recent war and unexpected changes to the royal court and ruling family.

When he was shown the pact weapon, he allowed his aetheric senses to examine it for the brief time it was left out.

Being a soldier for years and never having to fight was something to be envied. The human had wondered why Sol'Valen needed a standing army, other than that which was needed for ceremonial purposes and what might be needed for emergencies. It might be worth finding a book on the military history of modern Sol'Valen, just so he wasn't ignorant.

"It must be nice, knowing you're safe from war." His tone held a question in it, because maybe a solider wanted to see combat. "Is there anything stopping you from leaving? Kalzasi city is usually safe, outside of things like the Eclipse. I haven't had any issues with crime or the like in the years I've lived there."

When the topic changed back to weapons, he answered,

"I've used different polearms, mostly. Staves, naginatas, spears." He shrugged one shoulder thinking about the knife fighting Aurin had tried to teach him and Sivan's sword training, neither of which had gotten very far as all of them were able to tell that he was not particularly suited to smaller weapons. It had only been a few years since he had begun weapons work at all, but he didn't say this. Elves lived longer, so it made sense that they took their time learning things.

"I've learned some unarmed too, if that counts." His body could be a weapon, but that hadn't really been what the elf had been asking.
