"Oh, yes," she assured her, "quite interested."

Kala didn't push for a date and time. This meeting was meant to be brief; she had only come to say hello while dropping off a modest gift. No doubt watching the projections and then discussing them would take up a fair amount of time, more than it was polite to expect having come without warning.

"There is something magical about flying," she admitted. "You know, the way things were magical when we were small, before we learned how magic worked and some of the mystery receded." She smiled. "At least at first. Eventually, one finds new mysteries in it, I think. Not only do I need things cut to work with wings, but if I am going to be flying any great distance or through any rough weather, my attire must be adjusted."

Thankfully, the recent leap in her power—and responsibilities—allowed her more control over her mortal seeming. She wasn't ready to test it in the Imperium, but she could return to her merely human form or recall her wings to her at will. She supposed she could even seem Hytori without the need of the Animus rune, though that seemed as though it would be pandering rather than good diplomacy.

She found she was able to compartmentalize herself more now, which would make the remainder of her mortal life more comfortable, she supposed. In the tower she had claimed, she could allow herself to simply be. Everywhere else, she had to keep control of her nimbus, and the abilities she was gaining that set her forever apart from mortals.

Perhaps, though, that compartmentalization was not always a good thing. Case in point: Phocion.

"Ah." She nodded. "Prince Phocion has been courting me." She didn't place undue emphasis on who was courting whom, but well, she was still a young woman and would rather her friend think she was worthy of a prince's attention rather than that she was some sort of international social climber. "It started not long after my first visit to Silfanore and I wasn't certain whether it would last. I suppose I should have informed your father, at least. He is aware of my work there, but this is another matter. I didn't intend to dissemble; I have been trying to decide how I feel about it, let alone anyone else.

"He is charming. I don't espouse Varærynism, nor would I should I agree to espouse him."

As Akantha was, she thought, a friend, she did offer more of herself than she would have to a trade minister.

"I was surprised. If anything, he has an Avialae half-brother who knew nothing of Synnekar or Kathar culture. And a duke seems more... well, I don't want to speak to my worth, but the courtship of a duke would be less surprising to me than that of a prince." She paused, blue eyes full to brimming with sincerity.

"I did not intend to deceive your or your father. He is my first suitor and I... have kept it almost entirely to myself because I am unsure how to proceed." In fact, she wanted to ask Akantha if she had advice, but wasn't sure she ought to, unsure also how upset Akantha was. Even if it was highly unlikely Akantha had ever been courted by one of Varvara's Tethered, she was certain courting could be rocky terrain even for her.

They would find a time that worked for them. Akantha was always down to watch and rewatch runways, even if it was going to take a day or more to get through the ones she had recorded from the convention. There would be Sembling, picking them apart, discussing fit and merit and magical theory...

"That does sound about right. I suspect part of the magic is that for us that are raised on the ground, there's a freedom, a weightlessness to it that we can only dream of without magic. For those like your brothers, who have the ability to take to the skies... it doesn't hold the same wonder that it does for us," she smiled and sipped her tea. She remembered taking her first totem - she did love the osprey, and she loved what the great bird of prey represented. That freedom, that agility, that lethality that made even the most artful bipedal dancer seem slow and awkward. The fact that she had gotten its ocular ability was the icing on the cake.

But she did agree completely with the flying outfits. If she was doing a full transformation, then clothes were not needed. But when she was just doing the wings, building muscle and muscle memory... the clothing very much mattered. Sleek catsuits, skin-tight trousers and shirts that would not impinge on the wings or catch unnecessary wind currents and send her akimbo in the sky. Her accessories became built-in, whatever enhancements she could take that she could manage without adding additional weight and strain... All of it required a lot of forethought.

The Princess listened attentively to Kala as she offered her explanation and reasoning. She had been decidedly unhappy about it ever since her Father had mentioned it to her, and the tiny little irrational part of her brain had said that she had been stabbed in the back by someone she considered to be her friend. But she hadn't allowed the feelings of betrayal to fester and build up and poison her judgment: she knew that she owed the young northerner the conversation and to listen to what she had to say about it rather than judging her immediately without due process. Anyone else might not have gotten the opportunity to state their case, but Akantha quite liked her and enjoyed her company. They had a good time together when she visited, they had a great many similar interests.

She was studying her with Semblance as well as she talked, though it was more about emotions and intent than anything else. The young woman was a politician, and both of them were experienced in the double-talk and diplomacy that some situations called for. But she also found that she was not trying to mess with her. She did believe that she was sensing that uncertainty that wouldn't be there if this was part of some long-term game and a deliberate attempt at being an insider for her kingdom of heretics to the south.

Still, she was satisfied. She could take this information to her father and see what could be done to prevent the Solunarian mages from being able to use Kala, who spent a fair bit of time in confidence with government ministers here, and around members of the Royal House of Sol'Eilran, as an unwitting source of information. She knew enough that Phocion was one of the Phaedryns, and that was associated with the Silver Sentinels, and his mother was the Master Sembler of the place. If Phocion was courting her, then that undoubtedly brought her around his family, and into the orbit of Princess Cithaera.

More than him, she was the bigger concern.

Akantha wasn't really the voice of experience here. She had had a very few casual partners, and some that were considered as possible long-term suitors, but her parents had also encouraged her to enjoy herself and be safe while she did. She was still young by Hytori standards, and it would be quite some time before she would be expected to enter a marriage contract. And when she did, it would likely be as her Father did - with members of the ruling houses of Sol'Valen.

She was quiet for a moment as she considered. "You know... I knew when we met for the very first time at Prince Salmakis' party that you were special, Lady Kala. You may question it, but you are worthy of being courted by royalty. Not just because of your wings, but because of who you are and what makes you you. Your lovely personality, intuition, cleverness, intelligence, empathy, and manners, not to mention your capabilities with magic and your excellent eye for fashion," the Princess offered a small smile at that. "Never doubt yourself in this, and do not let them walk all over you because their title. There are those that will attempt to do so and expect to get away with it, but hold your own. If they don't like it, then they are not the one for you. There would be no balance in the relationship, and the disrespect will lead to resentment. And that is something that no healthy relationship can withstand for long."

As Akantha spoke, Kala relaxed incrementally, blue eyes going gloriously wide. She kept her aura well-guarded from deep intrusion, but she didn't hide her surface feelings, and she was both surprised and grateful, as well as a touch rueful that she hadn't expected Akantha to be rational and forgiving if she had made some misstep and apologized sincerely.

And so, "Thank you, Akantha."

Perhaps she ought to have been more formal, but while Akantha could live for hundreds of years, she was hardly old enough for the proper 'ma'am.' Perhaps this too was a misstep, but they were in private and she thought perhaps they could be informal with each other when in an informal setting.

She paused, waiting for some signal that the informality was welcome. Then, when she smiled, her eyes gleamed with unshed tears. She wanted to laugh at herself—she was becoming a goddess, after all. But Kala was also navigating the passage from young woman to young deity, and she had little experience in romance.

With so little experience, she was courted by a foreign prince. Did anyone have it as complicated as she did? Perhaps Akantha would.

From what Kala understood, most people gave even odds between Akantha and her siblings becoming the next to sit the Phoenix Throne. Were she to become a queen regnant, she would have similar concerns as Kala. Her consort would have to be trusted to set their personal loyalties aside to focus upon Akantha, Tronóridan, and Sol'Valen. Kala's would have to prioritize her divinity. And now she was Sovereignty; the fear of Varvara's chains hiding in Phocion like a fisherman's hook in a shiny lure were real.

Perhaps Akantha would be fortunate. Kala hoped so.

"You are welcome, Kala," Akantha gave her a small nod and a smile. The informality was accepted, it seemed, by the sometimes (her brothers might say oftentimes) prickly Princess of Thorns. In private, like this, she did not mind. There was no need to stand on ceremony nor need to impress with etiquette here, and it was, well, nice to be able to converse without needing to be strict.

She only hoped that Kala more or less knew what she was doing. She would hope that she would stay safe and grounded in herself without letting those Re'hyaeans devour her. She would see what her Father had to say about it, and how Sol'Valen's risk could be mitigated and what they would prefer from her going forward. This did change things, though there was bound to be ways to protect themselves while still allowing the young women an opportunity to enjoy each other's company.

They could enjoy their tea, and Akantha would slightly change the garment as they talked, utilizing the ability of therianthropy to add little capped sleeves out of the same wings that formed the 'fabric' of the gown. They seemed to form on top of her skin, and then lifted off of it, connecting to one another and fluttering gently before settling. What Kala may not have known was the amount of work and practice she had put into this technique under Ionsōra - forming wings of so many different sizes, layering them just so to make sure that they looked like one flowing garment.

This was easier than extra bony appendages, such as they were. Unlike bats and birds, butterfly wings did not contain bones. They were comprised of chitin, and covered in tiny little scales... which was how they got their iridescent effect, and helped to protect the wing and allow for heat management. They wouldn't, of course, enable her to fly; her body density was simply too much for them, no matter the size and quantity of the wings. Replacing her skeleton with the lightweight alternatives might have done it, but that was an awful lot of anatomy to focus on for something so relatively trivial. It would not do to drive herself into overstepping on something that cannot be done without a great deal of aether and focus.

It was always good to have a backup plan in case of emergencies, but as her teachers would tell her, never to put all of her eggs in one basket.
