Backstory: There once was a family of fae hunters around present-day Kalzasi. This family prided themselves for their eyesight. They even went so far as to pick mates based on this quality. Over generations an ability began to develop that started to produce eyes that were different than other mortals. This was seen as both a blessing and a curse. These individuals were granted enhanced eyesight, however the stress necessary to awaken one’s eyes required near-death experiences.
At some point people started killing their loved ones to induce high levels of emotion stress in hopes of further activating their bloodline which led to this trait slowly dying out. This is an incredibly rare bloodline because one has to both have genetic ties to this family and must also undergo immense stress to even know they have it.
Description: Upon having a near death experience, it’s possible for the ensuing stress to awaken this bloodline. It’s common for awakenings to happen during magical initiations. This causes a person’s iris color to turn a shade of red, possibly as a result of a massive increase of blood flow to that area of the eye. In addition, a black comma shaped notch is visible near their pupil.
As the individual experiences more and more stress throughout their life, more notches are added, up to three in total. It’s possible to learn to trigger the increased blood flow on and off at will but until that point the eyes will ‘activate’ automatically under periods of stress.
Ability: The increased bloodflow grants eagle vision. This includes a variety of effects such as farsight, clarity at distance, increased ability to perceive motion, and minor telescopic ability. It is an incredibly desirable trait to have for aiming ranged weaponry and picking up on details from a distance.
Contrary to legends, gaining more notches does not actually make one’s eyes stronger. These are merely physical indications that tell how much trauma someone has gone through.
