Lupine Legacy [Sivan]

Late Frost 124

A wind rose over the Astralar Mountains just as the sun was rising. It began as the forefront of a winter storm, blowing down from the high peaks above Starfall, rushing between buildings through the city until it spilled out over the walls back toward the wilds. Little else could slow the wind as it poured through the dense forests and raced up and up until it reached the bare summit that overlooked a deep valley. Holding at the top for a moment, swirling and picking up speed at the height before rushing down and over Stardew Valley. A wind can not have emotions, but the denizens of the valley assigned their own intentions to it. Some cursed it as it whipped cloaks open and hats off of heads, some worried at it, wondering it foretold another snow, some lifted their noses as it ruffled their fur and smelled the first hints of the coming Glade.

Huntress did this, sitting on her haunches in the small opening to the den in which she had spent the cold season. The two-legs would be worrying after her, but she had begun spending longer and longer stretches out in the forests alone, to accustom them to her absences in preparation for what had been to come. Neither the metal-mage nor the half-pup, nor her now-mate, had spent the cold season in the valley. Even the fox-man who had first taken her from her mother had only rarely appeared to check on the carved-den that was being built for the two-legs to live in.

Glade was only a few weeks off now, though it was always a slow transition as the cold tried to cling to the land, it was better in the valley. The mages worked together with the spirits to bring the growing season early and hold onto it longer now.

The sound of snuffling exploration and play behind the wolf was a gentle pressure. The pups had come with the first snows of Frost and had required all of her attention except for necessary trips out to hunt. It would have been easier with a mate, even more so with a pack of her own, but neither were available, so she made due. She could have whelped in the warmth of any of the buildings of her two-leg pack, but she hadn't wanted her pups to be domesticated. They needed to know that they were wolves before they discovered that they were anything else. She had already begun taking them out, already had let them blood their muzzled in several of her kills and glut themselves on the meat until their tiny bellies were so round they could barely walk. They knew now, what they were in their hearts, and they were too big to keep in the den any longer. They needed to be introduced to the ideas of the two-legs so they could live and care for the valley alongside them without ever being hunted. It was a balance, but one their mother had prepared for with care.

There was one who they needed to meet before the others though, it was only right. Her now-mate's scent had entered the valley the day before, and the wind still carried it. He was down where the scent of sharp chemicals and metal was strongest, but the scents would do the pups no harm, even if they might whine about it.

A sharp bark got their attention, and once she had it, she let them know, in the way of wolves, that it was time to leave the den. This excited them, for they were too large for the small space and preferred to be out as much as possible. Two, however, cocked their heads to one side, sensing that something was different about this outing. The two were sack-mates, nearly identical, but not quite. Huntress ignored their inquiring expression and bounded out across the snows. The litter followed, her new young pack, trying to keep up. They could not, but they did their best, plowing through the deep drifts with the fearlessness of those who have known only safety.

Two hours later they were tired, though not yet exhausted, and this too was good. Better that they be a little tired so as not to overwhelm. Her now-mate was within the largest building, she could smell his concentration, as well as a thousand other scents, none of which existed in the natural world. It was a place of exploring the wonders of what nature could be changed into, and Huntress did not think less of her two-legs for their exploration. Sitting below a tree with thick enough winter foliage to allow a snow-less space below it, she called her pups in with her. Once they were all sitting or laying to rest, she sent out a call into her now-mate's mind. She had to do this several times before his aether-scenting ability alerted him to her presence. He was not easily distracted when he was working.

Sivan was weary. A brief trip to Kalzasi to look into the workshop he shared with Torin had turned into an emergency trip to the valley; a storm was imminent and he needed to speak to the gritaeri to ensure it gentled the winds for those who lived under Torin's protection. He had facilitated discussion between Lord Kilvin and the great spirit, but he was the one who was fluent. And so he was on the roof, dancing with the wind, speaking as a Dratori spiritwalker, but also calling on the other, lesser spirits of the place to hear him.

One small child peered out the frosted window to watch the elf man create his own aurora borealis to keep them safe from the newborn god of winter, whose winds howled like wolves. The wolves of winter, however, keened higher and higher, leaving the relative warmth of the valley alone, and he felt the touch of another wolf in his mind. He didn't know how she did that, but he supposed it had something to do with him knowing the spirit of Wolf. Timon had asked him to check on her because she had refused to come home, so this was opportune.

As he descended from the roof into the house, he began to remove his clothes even though his limbs were heavy with weariness and cold. As he passed through the house, he changed. While he still had opposable thumbs, he opened the door, and then fell down to all fours—paws now, not hands. A golden, blue-eyed wolf exited the building pulling the door closer to closed with his nose before he trotted down to where he felt her waiting.

The shifting wind brought her scent to him—more neutral now than sometimes, thanks be to the Gods—but she was different and not just for having spent the winter in a den. No, there were others. Wolves. They smelled of her and they smelled...

Oh.

He didn't know if he blinked in surprised. He didn't know if wolves did that.

The golden wolf padded into view, paused at a respectful distance, sat. Many eyes stared at him, their shapes slowly resolving as his eyes grew accustomed to the low light.

One did not know, he said in the manner of wolves. Respectful. Mournful. Confused.

Far away, the concerns of his two-legged life waited: the defense of a thesis to prove he was master of his art. It was different than the urge he felt now, to run the length and breadth of this valley and claim it as his own. But he was only newly back in his lupine form. It had been too long. The golden elves oft lived among the wild, but they were not of it, not in a fundamental sense that mattered to him here and now.

A posture of pride that was not a little smug suffused the mother's form as the father approached.

What did One think the purpose of mating was? Her head tilted very slightly to one side, an ear flicking forward as though deeply interested in his answer. She was not mocking him, but she was, perhaps, gently teasing. It was possible he did not know the purpose, he seemed to spill his seed only in other males in his two-leg form. If he did not, it was better he learn from her than a bear mother, who would not be interested in his input after the mating.

I would have you to meet your offspring.

She called out to the pups, in the way of wolves. There was a hesitation, a scenting and looking to one another among the small ones sheltering below the branches. They had not seen a grown wolf that was not their mother, and they knew how dangerous she was. The consensus they seemed to come to was that she would protect them, and they knew better than to disobey her. So, they came. The largest first, with coloring even darker than his mothers, then two that bore their father's gold mixed with their mother's white in perfectly matching patters. The last two tumbled out, playfully nipping at each other, both with similar fur patterns to their mother, if perhaps a tad lighter.

One has raised them in the way of wolves. Huntress informed, though it seemed obvious, she was proud of giving them something she had needed to learn on her own.

The pups hesitated in a little group around their mother, even the largest unsure, before the golden pair exchanged a look and walked over on chubby little legs to greet their sire with sniffing.

The golden wolf considered her question and, despite its town, answered in all seriousness.

One mates with the metal-man for affection, he said, though he hesitated over the word 'mates' because it implied procreation, which wasn't naturally occurring between men. He also wasn't sure that he was 'speaking' in 'words,' but 'Torin' had come out as 'metal-man,' which he supposed was accurate in a certain light. One will not make whelps with him, but we are pack.

His golden-furred form telegraphed nervousness when she asserted her goal for this meeting, but he didn't oppose her. She clearly had a handle on things, and if she wanted to raise wolves, then he was not a likely candidate for a male she would want around. But if she was introducing them to him, she must want him to form some relationship with them. As nervous as he was, they were so new, they likely had no idea what to make of him.

Perhaps it was a thought or perhaps it was an instinct. As the pups approached, he laid himself down on the snow, alert but not aggressive, and making himself smaller so they needn't feel quite so threatened by his presence. He could only hope they wouldn't intuit his discomfort, which wasn't their fault; it was more his surprise and his not having time to process what this meant. Their lives had been so short, he was already thinking of their futures, as well as whether he had made a mistake—well, he hadn't intended to wear a wolf's weeds in Huntress' presence while she was in estrus, but he didn't really have a mentor when it came to the Rune of Animus.

Hello, little ones, he said in the manner of wolves. You are loved.

Wolves weren't talented liars, and it showed in their speech, which was only partially uttered. The rest was body language. He found that it was true what he said. Sivan would hunt for them, teach them what he knew, and fight for their safety. He didn't know how his feelings would change when he returned to his true form, but for the time being, he could smell that they were his, and he responded to that.

Huntress blinked and cocked her head at the answer. It seemed to be an explanation of things that were obvious, but perhaps they were not obvious to those who walked on two legs most of the time. It was polite of her mate to attempt to explain, even if she did not need it, so she allowed it without interruption.

His nervousness was natural, most males were less comfortable around pups, particularly the first few times, than were mothers. So long as all did their duty, all was well. She watched, projecting a sense of calm and pride to both sire and offspring.

The two golden twins, for they had shared a sack inside her, paused when Sivan changed positions, but then approached him fully, sniffling all around him, one on each side, as they might examine a new space. When they returned to his face, they sat on their little haunches side by side, examining him. They did not have the complexity of communication that their mother did yet, but through sending scents and feelings they let it be known that they appreciated the sentiments before sending more a more complex flurry of things.

The two golden pups yipped their ascent, the two smaller, darker ones sort of huddled back towards Sivan while looking at their mother with obvious concern at her being gone, the largest glanced between his mother and father, unsure of how to take this information.

Huntress let her tongue loll out in amusement, interpreting,

They wish to know if you would like to play-hunt with them. An image of the puppies chasing and wrestling with each other was provided by the mother, which had all the pups' perking up and paying attention. The more reluctant three were also making their way over to snuffle and investigate their golden progenitor.

The largest, a rolly-polly chonker of a male, papped his paw atop Sivan's where it rested in the snow. It was gentle, more inquisitive than playful, but willing to become playful depending on the response.

I will go and bring a fresh kill for them. This to Sivan, then, to the pups, You will stay within sight of your sire.

Well, she had asked.

In any case, he didn't know whether wolves mated for affection when their pheromones didn't demand they mate for procreation of the species.

It took him a moment longer than the pups to interpret her flurry of impressions. He had learned this language as a scholar learned languages; the pups were fluent. Perhaps he sounded foreign to them as well.

But he shifted his posture even where he lay, indicating his assent. If he had trouble wrangling all five of them, there were spirits who would help. The golden wolf made no quick movements as the twins gave him a full revolution. Ears went erect at the mention of hunting.

One should practice one's hunting, he admitted. Are they good for eating? Then the chonker bapped his paw. He blinked. One is prey?

Bapping back gently, the chonker seemed happy to bap again. Repetition. But then Sivan whuffed as he pretended to nip the bapping paw. But he missed, so he dropped his head to his paw with a dramatic expression.

This one is too fast. One will never catch him.

Sivan shared amused eye contact with Huntress before she disappeared into the brush with a natural elegance he wasn't sure he would ever learn properly. They would play. She would bring food, and he could guide them to water if they grew thirsty. Everything would be fine. He just had be to very, very careful that he didn't roll over one of them when the time came to let them take him down. Later, he would have to wonder how this felt more natural than it had felt to play with his half-siblings when he was a child.

If you wanted this one to continue, we can re-open. :)
