Areya was on an easier assignment, if such a thing truly existed down here in the Warrens. She was in one of the more secured areas, known as the Drums, after these strange rock formations scattered throughout that did rather look like drums sitting there. She, and many other conscripts, were posted through the area, idle sentries for the most part. They were just here to hold, and aid, anyone who came through here. Areya was leaning against the cool, stone wall, her eyes scanning the many passageway entrances she'd been assigned to keep tabs on. If anything came through, deal with it, call for aid if needed. The rest of the unit she was in were equally scattered around the large, open cavern.

Drammond was over on the far side, playing with some mosses growing there. The man had been a chef back in the topside and was obsessed with finding out what was edible and what wasn't. His experiments often ended with violent noises coming from his shit bucket in the later parts of the night, sounds that a person could never unhear. But still, the man continued to hold onto that one bit of his life before. Maybe he shouldn't have killed his cheating husband. Not that Areya could understand such emotion. She'd never managed to get a lover topside. For her kind, she was still young, a maiden truly. She never had a chance to fall in love or even chase whimsical crushes.

And if the gamblers down here were to be rewarded, she'd never get out to get the chance again. Torria walked over, leaning against the stone, staring way up at Areya, who was pointedly ignoring her, "Wutchya doin babe?" Areya's eyes never left the entrances she was watching, though she wished she could've rolled them in this moment. The human woman always got so easily distracted by other women. "What you should be doing."

Torria smiled broadly at the retort, "Why? You have all of the tunnels covered, I'm here if you need help. Unless you need a break, we can get Drammond over here to watch the tunnels, while you and me go... train."

This did get an eyeroll out of Areya, whose head lulled down to like at the short human woman, not saying anything, before casting them back on the tunnels. Torria laughed, turning to sit down against the wall, "One of these days, you'll get that stick out your ass." Then she smirked, "And I'll show you truly how to have fun with it."

As they sat there, watching and waiting, listening to Drammond groan as one of the mosses he ate was causing him some severe stomach cramps, various soldiers, adventurers, and fortune seekers strolled through. Some ignored them, others stopped to ask for directions or hints and tips. Torria talked to them all, she was the one who liked talking to people. Areya just kept watching the tunnel, idly listening to the Torria flirt with everyone who came through.

龍 13th of Glade, Year 121, A.o.S 龍
Company: Hansui| Thoughts: Wonder what they did?| Mood: Confused/Curious

龍 Hyoga was determined to polish his skills up a bit more before helping Hannah with her heist or job or what have you. He also wanted to be extra ready in case he ran into them, into the ones who would receive his vengeance. He was not going to face them and not be ready for a fight. He knew that if they were strong enough to defeat both of his parents, then they were not to be taken lightly in any regard.

Traversing the Warrens was hard, as it was easy to get lost in such an expanse of space, tunnels leading to who knows where, and the fear over walking into a nest of those fleshy demon things he has come accustom to killing while down in here. The good thing though was that he was not alone, Hansui was with him, and on top of that if Hyo did get lost he knew he could count on the element of earth to help guide him back to the surface.

Coming around a bend the two warriors could see the littering of men and women, dressed in unfamiliar armor. Hansui noticed the look of confusion on Hyoga's face and chuckled a bit. "That is the Dead Legion. Men and women who have committed some crime and were subjected to conscription to serve out their sentence." he chimed, causing the kathar to look at him, then back to those they passed by. "Some find themselves serving life sentences, but some are only here for however long their sentence warrants. Some even volunteer to be among their ranks, for what reason I will never know." he added, shrugging his shoulders.

It was interesting enough to warrant Hyo to wonder what some of the ones that they had passed by had done to land themselves here, in the Warrens of all places. 龍

Keeping her attention sharp, Areya was able to hear the conversation of the pair that had entered the Drums. Another educational spectacle it seemed. No different than if they were animals at a zoo. Areya found her temper flaring up, and her eyes gazing daggers in the direction of the newcomers. Her nostrils flared as she began to focus more heavily on her breathing exercises, trying to meditate her temper down a bit. But still, her body pulled away from the wall she was leaning against, and her feet carried her over to the pair.

"Don't believe everything you hear. Everyone down here is serving a death sentence. Only two or three have ever been able to walk out of here after their sentence was up."

Her face was obvious in that she was still seething but she was keeping her politeness appropriate. Not that she needed to, but she did need to get a better hold on her temper, considering that was what got her sent down here in the first place. She stuck out a hand, still not smiling, "Hello, my name is Areya. Can the Dead Legion assist you all today?" It certainly wasn't something that was common or expected of the Dead Legion.

But if they were going to have an educational moment surrounding her and the other living corpses that kept them safe every single day, then she was going to make sure they knew who they really were. Torria came over, all charm and smiles and flirtation, "Areya, introduce me to your new friends..." Where Areya was tall, Torria was short, Areya dark skinned and elven, Torria pale and human. Both were wearing leather armor, Areya's darker than her skin, while Torria's had more of a red sheen to it. Both wore their weapons and gear openly.

Torria offered her hand in a much more dainty fashion, the former courtesan knowing the ways of the more uppercrust portion of society.

龍 13th of Glade, Year 121, A.o.S 龍

龍 The two warriors were greeted by a legionnaire, the woman earning the startlement of Hansui, and the curiosity of Hyoga. She introduced herself as Areya, Hyo noticing her ears and knowing from that that she was elven. He hadn't really met too many elves before, so he was somewhat curious about her. Even more so he was curious as to what the woman could have done to end up here.

"Hyoga, Hyoga Yoko, and this little guy here is Hansui." he introduced, though Hansui didnt like being referred to as the little guy even though he was indeed smaller than his Avialae counterpart. With a hearty chuckle, Hyo and Hansui bowed to the woman.

His eyes surveyed her, her expression almost as if they had annoyed her with their presence. It was natural now for Hyo to equate any look other than joy for disgust for his Kathar heritage, his fist clenching at the thought. Hansui noticed this and simply tapped him on the arm to snap him back to the conversation.

Areya inquired as to if she could be of service to them, and Hyo smiled. "Well We are here to look for Dragon shards that are loose laying around this level of the Warrens. With any luck we may face a monster too, I could use the training." he informed, scratching his head.

He was hoping for some excitement to say the least. Ideally, he was here to train, but he was also looking for the blue dragonshard he got from the merchant that one time. He figured that with more of them, he could bring them to Talon and see if he could make him some armor with them.

As they conversed with Areya, another figure appeared, asking the elven woman to introduce her to Areya's new "friends" "I highly doubt she considers us as friends miss."

Areya's face showed her uncomfortable surprise at the two men bowing to her. Were these foreigners or morons? Or were they making fun of her? She could feel the prickly nature of her temper rising beneath her skin, but she fought it back. She mustn't lose control, not again. The entire while, she watched them closely, a habit formed down here. She saw the clenching fist, seeing that the one called Hyoga had his heckles raised as well. Typical ruffled feathers Avialae. She'd met enough down here in her new life to have a much more accurate read on them compared to her life before.

Then came his lackadaisical response. Why were so many people who came down here so casual about it? Her teeth grit, shown by jaw in her thin face clenching, her nostrils flaring once. Thankfully Torria was already there, wrapping an arm around Areya's waist far too comfortably for her. Areya peeled the woman's arm from her, "This is Torria, we're in the same unit today."

Torria laughed, moving closer toward Hyo, "Isn't she just a peach? I'm surprised Ms. Surly there didn't say something like 'There are no friends in the Dead Legion.'" Torria looked back, blowing a kiss at Areya, "You're so cute when you're grumpy, love."

Torria now was looking up into the face of Hyo, "However, she is far too polite to say what I will. She, and many of us conscripts, find it difficult to form lasting bonds when so many of us die every single day, to these monsters you think are good luck to come across.. She's only been here for a year and that makes her the senior to more than half of the conscripts."

The woman spoke with an air of confidence, and presented herself with a tempting allure, one that might typically only be found in the Cabaret or a similar high end establishment. "But lets not let that sour things. The real luck is that you found us. Because we will help you, if you'd like. Our friend over there with the stomach issues will continue to watch our post here, and we can lead you to some of the lesser traveled Dragonshard harvesting spots. So many of you strapping, young.... pretty... adventurers come down here, so many of the well known spots get picked clean. As for monsters... is there a specific one you'd like to find?"

Areya continued to look as though she was sucking on a particularly tart lemon, but her respect for Torria had grown. She was so good at reading people, and speaking well. She was Areya's cell neighbor, and had been for a full season now. Areya decided, since Torria had at least done her part, she could herself overcome her anger and annoyance and extend an olive branch of her own.

"I don't recommend training against a monster you've never seen before. When we train down here, we train in tactics for both teamwork and against specific threats we come across. If you come by during our off days, you could train with us as well."

Then Areya stepped forward, standing next to Torria before Hyo, "I apologize for my behavior." Meanwhile, Torria's face seemed about ready to break apart from the smile there. She'd never once heard Areya apologize, nor heard her offer up even the smallest sliver of something such as that. With a coy smile, "Well, gentlemen. Will you have us?"

龍 Hyo figured it couldnt hurt to have some extra help down here, especially since he figured these Legionnaires knew the Warrens better than he did. And if they knew some spots that hadn't been picked clean of loose dragon shards, that was a plus as well. Out of the two, Torria was far more friendly, though he like Areya's candidness.

With a smile he nodded, bowing to both women. "It would be an honor to have such valued members of the Legion guiding us. I can't refuse a request from such pretty faces." he accepted, gesturing for the ladies to lead the way.

"I think it would be nice to face something different here. I fight shamblers all the time when I come here, but when I first arrived, I fought against wraiths. I think I would like to fight those again." he mused, rubbing his chin as he thought of the possibilities.

"As for the training, I would love to come and train with you guys, learn some new stuff and tactics." he agreed with a jovial smile on his face. For the time they had been walking Hyoga had been studying them both. Neither looked to be hardened criminals, or murderers so he could fathom why they were here, conscripted of all things.

"If you dont mind me asking, why are you two of all people here, I mean a legionnaire. I can't seem to wrap my head around it, as you both dont give me guilty vibes."

Areya looked to Torria, "You're thinking of the Fellows, aren't you?"

Torria grinned, "You know me so well, love. You know I love it there. And we fought against my first wraith there too. With that chubby fellow that was packing more than cake in those trousers. What happened to him? I haven't been assigned with him for a while now."

Areya's face went grim, "He was possessed by a Rage Wraith, attempted to escape, and when he was detained, he exploded in a ball of fire, killing him, a Sky Guard, and two conscripts."

Torria knew better than to continue that particular conversation, just letting it hang out there in the air for a while.

Areya spoke up, "I know a route through the Drummonds and the Lattice that will get us to the Fellows safely enough. Should be some of us posted up along the way, so we don't need to be stealthy for this travel, though still be mindful. You can't ever let your guard down here."

Areya drew her torch, lighting it up, taking lead, while Torria took the rear behind Hyoga and Hansui, taking the time to check out both of their bottoms. She'd be drawing them later. She loved drawing men's rumps. At the question of their crimes, Torria spoke up first, "I was fuckin' this nobleman for a while, and his wife didn't take kindly to it. She said the gifts that her husband had given me had actually been stolen by me. I had no evidence to counter this, and her being a noble, got her way. So here I am."

Areya glowered. "I assaulted a nobleman who insulted my parents' shop. They gave me a far longer sentence than typical." Areya was silent as they walked, that was her normal state when traveling through the Warrens. Her eyes and ears were always watching and listening, and she kept the pace a bit slower. She always leaned toward caution and stealth first. She led the group to the Drummonds first, a large area filled with large stalagmites in the shape of drums. Areya could see the conscripts posted here, taking a moment to ask the traveling companions a question of her own, one that had been burning at her for over a season now.

"Why do you adventurers constantly come down here? This is literally the most dangerous place in the world to be. Money? Prestige? 'Training'? All of this can be done topside. There's no reason to venture down into hell. What happens if you get possessed by a Wraith and let it loose topside? Or you contract one of the diseases down here, spread it to your friends and family? We lost an entire wing two weeks ago to Eye Rot. Every time someone ventures down here, they put the lives of so many others in jeopardy. So why? When you have the choice, the freedom, and the ability to go anywhere in the world, why do you choose hell?"

Hyoga found both women to be fairly entertaining, polar opposites in personalities, but cohesive enough that they complemented one another well. They were lucky enough that they had each other to keep company. They didnt seem to judge one another of the reasons they ended as conscripts in the Dead Legion. Hyo would be lying if he said he wasnt jealous of their relationship, looking to Hansui as he was more so a subordinate than a friend, well at least that's how the young human acted towards the Kathar.

When the woman divulged the reasons for being conscripted, he found a frown forming on his face as he was well aware of the snobbish behavior of Kalzasians, throwing their weight around over petty concerns. "I guess it pays not to piss off nobility. That being said, some of them are petty little shits." he commented, a serious look on his face from his encounter with the one that attacked him a few days ago.

The walk to the first area that was mentioned, the Drummonds was a quiet one, mostly the sounds of their footsteps moving forward and the clang of armor filling the airspace around them, Hyo looking around and making mental notes of the area for when he came back on his own. Areya broke the silence however with an inquiry. It was a valid question, but given his own strength and capabilities, it was not one he had considered thoroughly.

"Well I can't speak for others, but I can say that I come here as it's a challenge. I was raised to always push beyond my current limit, no matter the cost. The Warrens affords me the perfect proving ground to sharpen and hone my skills and magic, as there are things here that can test my talents better than anything topside.

I can also attest to the fact that everything isn't all peaches and honey up there too."
he added, gesturing upward with his left wing. "If you can afford a comfortable life it is peaceful, but there are people who still suffer, despite the current government's attempts to improve their condition. It's the sad reality that whether you are topside or down here, you are still living in some form of hell. The only difference between the two is one was naturally made to kill you faster than the other." he continued, his tone firm but calm as he knew all too well what it was like topside.

Areya's eyebrows raised at the man's response. She supposed he was right, but she knew she'd much rather the topside hell over this near literal one. Harrumphing slightly, "Maybe if nobles were held to the same justice inflicted on the rest of us, things would be different." That was an interesting thought, one she'd not entertained. Torria grinned to herself from the back, knowing that it would be the topic of her and Areya's private discussions for the foreseeable future. It was nice to see her friend being so much more sociable than normal.

"Why do you push your limits as such? To what goal or end do you seek with these deadly efforts? We do it down here just to stay alive."

They strolled through the Drummonds, nodding at each conscript, entire a corridor toward the Lattice. As they moved, a wind formed, moving against their path, slowing them and carrying a damp smell with it. Nothing unusual about that. Around another bend, the Lattice came into view. It was a maze of narrow pathways in a large cavern, with one visible exit on the opposite side. And between the narrow pathways, large gaps dropping down into nothingness.

But there were no conscripts stationed here.

"Guard up."

Areya walked forward, obviously finding no conscript standing among them here in the entryway. But she didn't see another posted at the exit either. Had they abandoned post? Or been killed? More likely the latter, as the former just meant dying a bit later. Over top some of the pathways was a mesh of ropes, pinned into various walls. Handholds and a guide through the maze. Areya belted her knife, to have an open hand, while the other carried the torch, the only form of light in here.

In a bare whisper back to the group, "One hand on the rope overhead, one on your weapon. Stay close but not in weapon striking range. A knot means a turn. If someone loses footing, the group stops until they've recovered or fallen. You all are my wide eyes, I'll be focused on our path and watching the depths."

Torria nodded, and waited to bring up the rear. Areya reached out with her left hand, grasping the rope overhead in an iron grip, holding her torch at waist height so as to not burn the ropes overhead. She stepped out on the path, which was just a bit more wide than if her two feet were side by side. She'd come this way many a time, but this was the first where the area was unwatched by conscripts. Something bad had to have happened. She sidled forward, toe to heel, both walking as quietly as she could muster, and focusing on keeping her center of balance over the stone. At least one conscript was lost every month to the seemingly bottomless depths here in the Lattice.

She made her way to the first knot, following the light to pivot to the left. As she went, her torch sputtered a bit, and the wind of the area stopped altogether. The air began to grow warmer as she inched along. The light of her torch began to soften as they went.

'What do top siders know about limits?

Areya's focus faced, with the tightly bound lips drooped down into a scowl, unseen yet illuminated by the dimming torchlight. She continued along slowly, eyes scanning the darkness below them and the ceiling above them. Ploppers could drop from above and Shins, though rare in here, could attack from below, clinging to the walls and blindly lashing out with their tentacles.

'Top siders are worse than the monsters here. They should know better.'

They definitely should. Areya knew she did. At least now. She'd come to learn the humility and that death and incarceration was a great equalizer. Or could be, if applied to all who deserved it. Who earned it. Being born noble meant looking down upon those bound by the system, meant exploiting those people to keep and further the life's advantages given to them at birth. All nobles deserved to be down here.

'All top siders do. To learn what you've learned.'

Areya nodded, continuing to creep along. The hand holding the torch slowly began to raise as she was now about a third of the way to the other side. She had learned the lessons here, Torria had as well. And so many others. And those that failed to learn it had died. That was the way of the world here. And all should learn it. To learn the helplessness and terror, to learn to pull themselves out of the darkness and to truly be something more than the gutter creatures that all top siders started their life had been.

The torch sputtered again as the Rage Wraith that had hidden within its flames slipped silently into Areya's body, seizing control. Areya looked back at her companions, her eyes carrying flaming wisps within them, and she smiled.

Top siders needed to learn.

Areya's torch raised up and the flames caught ahold of the guiding rope mesh. The Wraith within her coaxed them, and the flames shot out all along them, far faster than natural. Torria had seen the flames in Areya's eyes, and she immediately slipped into action. She let go of the rope mesh, as the flames licked by. She grabbed a torch from her belt, and held it up to the burning rope overhead, igniting it as well. She pulled the torch away, just as Areya's stolen body began to turn back to the path, dropping her own torch down into the bottomless abyss. She walked with an unnatural grace now, one that was not her own, putting more distance between her and her following companions.

Areya's voice rang out from the increasing darkness she was disappearing into, "They need to learn..."
