History
Reflecting back on the beginning, one would find Ilphas began as many do; In a simple life of limited view. His obligations were limited to only that which his family asked of all their noble born children, mastery of the sword and the art of Jeyet, practice of summoning, and the written word. With an elder brother to take on the burden of a father’s expectations, Ilphas was left to his own privileged amusements. With a father of renown for mastery of the Runeforge, he never went without.
But when his elder brother died young his life changed. His Jeyet was no longer adequate in his fathers eyes. His hobbies became frivolous. His chosen passion of Alchemy was now distasteful. A proper d’Yllaric pursued the much rarer craft of Runeforging, and bore the traditional familial sword armed with both the martial training of the Jeyet and the Rune of Reaving. As the new eldest, this expectation came in the wake of his fraternal loss.
At first his success with his Summing Rune and his affinity for the eldritch spirits who his father regarded with such high esteem won him approval. But this was not enough for the patriarch d’Yllaric. The pressure to abandon Alchemy and take up the family craft of Runeforging mounted, causing contention between father and son. The culmination of all this change was the acquiring of the Rune of Reaving for Ilphas. The arcane ritual was traumatic and caused a rift between father and son, though it was successful and he was able to earn the forging of a sword and take his place as an adult amongst his family.
In the end it was this bloody and intimate ritual of Reaving and the refusal to give up Alchemy which broke his rapidly straining relationship with his father. He was cast aside and abandoned. His allowances removed and his life in shambles, Ilphas went to his father with only a change of clothes, his sword, his bokken, and his Aidolon in tow. He declared himself Ilphas d’Yllaric in defiance and left Auris to seek a life to fill that name…
