Name: Inkwood

Habitat: The Inkwood tree is found exclusively in the lush jungle rainforests of Ecith, often growing in the the shade cast by much greater trees, in places were direct light rarely reach.

Rarity: Rare

Threat: Low. Inkwood trees are not aggressive and pose little threat to humans or wildlife. However, their rarity makes them valuable and potentially the focus of resource conflicts.

Description: The Inkwood tree is a striking botanical wonder, easily distinguishable by its ebony-black bark, which gives the tree its name. It can reach towering heights of up to 30 meters or cap out at 10 depending on the expanse of darkenss they are allowed. Its branches adorned by dark, waxy leaves that shimmer like polished obsidian. Its roots spread deep and wide in the jungle's fertile soil.

Biome Role: Inkwood trees play a unique role in the rainforest ecosystem. The trees act as anchors their roots providing tremendous stability to the local soil with their far reaching and fast growing root system, providing stability for many smaller plants and fungi. Their presence supports the rainforest's biodiversity by maintaining several fungal populations, which in turn sustains various animals and insects.

Aging & Reproduction: Inkwood trees are known for their longevity, with some specimens living for several centuries. They reproduce through seeds that are spread by the wind and carried by birds and insects. The seeds require specific conditions to germinate, making the growth of new Inkwood trees a slow process. Their germination requiring an entire year in a moist environment untouched by light.

Size: Mature Inkwood trees can reach impressive heights, never quite reaching above the jungle canopy but snaking beneath it in the shade.
Abilities and Features:
• Sap Production: The most significant feature of the Inkwood tree is its unique sap. When harvested and processed, this sap is a vital ingredient in creating ink. It possesses natural binding properties that enhance the durability of written content and contribute to the ink's mystical qualities.
• Durability: Inkwood wood is incredibly durable and resistant to decay, making it prized for crafting items that require longevity, such as furniture, carvings, and even boats.

• Luminous Leaves: At night, the leaves of the Inkwood tree emit a faint, ethereal glow as they purge the light accumulated over the course of the day, which adds to their mystical reputation.

Cultural Significance (If applicable): Inkwood trees have provided one of the most common forms of Ink used by the Ecithian peoples making good ink for both scribing and tattooing in equal measure. unnecessary destruction of these trees is taboo. It is rare enough that the deadwood from the trees sells for great value.

• Characters may seek out Inkwood trees to harvest their sap for the creation of Reveler's Ink.

• Quests could revolve around protecting these trees from exploitation, especially if their rarity threatens the production of Ink.

• Explorers might be drawn to the rainforest to witness the mesmerizing glow of Inkwood leaves at night.
