Dulcia Domestica [Solo]

In which Hilana makes a traditional snack.

The Luxium represents the upper half and primary seat of the Solunarian Capital and one of the dual-cities that comprises Solunarium Proper. Situated between the foot of the volcanic Mount Sorokyn and the wide River Vasta, this above-ground metropolis boasts five thriving districts beneath the shadow of the glorious Palatium Furiarum (The Blazing Palace) from which the Solar Court rules in splendour. This bustling metropolis is by far the most populous region in the realm and, along with its shadowy sister-city the Umbrium, houses upwards of eighty percent of the Solunarian population at any given time. During the reign of a Solar Court, every major government agency in the kingdom is headquartered in the Luxium, with the notable exception of The Silver Sentinels, the covert intelligence agency run by the House of Phaedryn-Sol’Aværys.

[Closed - Solo]

Hilana was sitting down at the table with a large basket of dates, a bowl of shelled walnuts, a bowl of ground black pepper, and a dish of salt. She had a book propped up in front of her on a stand for her to read while she worked, since most of the work involved in making dulcia domestica was quite tedious and it was largely muscle memory. But it made for a good snack, and a traditional treat to put out when Lia had a few friends over. Hilana would make herself scarce later, as their circles didn't always overlap, and she knew Lia would like to make a good impression. Besides, it was good for her to have friends outside of her sister. Hilana may well have been the more outgoing of the two, but Lia knew how to comport herself in public.

It wasn't anything exotic, but it was a rather customary hors d'oeuvres. She put a handful of walnuts halves and pieces into the mortar on the table, and got to work on that, using the pestle to crush them down somewhat - they didn't need to be a paste, but she just wanted them a bit smaller than they were. Sure, she could have used a rolling pin, but that was far messier. This way, she could visually see the size of the nuts as she was working on them, and that gave her more control. Her eyes drank up the pages of the fiction book on the stand, grinning a little as she reached to turn the page. The walnut pieces were moved to another dish, and a fresh handful went into the mortar. This was a process that would need to be repeated until she was done, and then she could turn her attention to the dates.

She picked up the paring knife, and got to work on slicing into the date in order to get the pit out. Those she would pop into her mouth and enjoy the taste of the date, all the while cleaning off the seed. Those, of course, would go into another bowl in order for them to be prepared for planting and spreading them back out so that yet another date grove could form. She took that little bit of personal responsibility quite seriously, after all.
