A Winter Wonderland
Frost 50, 124th Year, A.o.S.
Image
There was no shortage of parties of all kinds throughout Silfanore, and Sol’Valen in general. That wasn’t including the festivals, of course, or special days of devotion to the pantheon. Most were open to nobles, some were reserved for royal families only, and some were by invitation only. And some of the more coveted invitations were those issued by the Princess of Thorns. As the weather turned cold and wet, infrequent flurries of snowflakes offered children a little taste of natural magic.

Some, of course, took the end of the year to relax and winter, staying in where they were warm and dry; but Akantha had been keeping herself busy overseeing the arrangements for her Winter Ball. The attendance list had involved the noble and royal families, and she had picked a select few others to receive invitations. Decorations had been planned and arranged, entertainment sampled and chosen, comestibles and libations coordinated with the wintry theme. Considering her fondness for Aedrin, the seasons and cycle were a constant, welcome dance, and she would honour and celebrate it.

Those that arrived at the Royal Palace would walk through the well-lit hall to find themselves before a shimmering portal. Cloaks and coats could be checked there by those who had chosen to wear them, if so desired and were not a part of the outfit. Upon stepping through it, it would seem that they were outside - every appearance suggested it, with a snowy path brightened by arcane lights above and around them as well as in the trees that lined the path and perfectly spherical orbs of ice lined the path. And yet, it was not cold. There was clearly snow falling, but it did not land on the guests. There was no wind bearing down on them - for all intents and purposes, despite being outside, it felt like they were inside. The hues of twilight were would be slow to fade into the dark of the evening, but the lights were plentiful.

There was a gentle slope to the tunnel, though it was barely noticeable. It was broad enough for two people to walk side by side quite comfortably without feeling cramped or closed in. The pathway opened up into a wide open space, and allowed them to walk down a few wide steps to come into the 'ball room', such as it was. The floor of it looking like pressed mosaic tiles made of snow, though it was as solid as any marble. There was still plenty of snow around the edges, piles and piles of it, especially around a number of glass-like bubbles that featured comfortable booth-like seats, giving people an opportunity to take a load off and take a break - they were specially warded to reduce the amount of external noise, allowing for comfortable conversation while still being able to enjoy the music that was playing.

Hundreds of crystalline lights and lanterns were suspended overhead, illuminating the snow that continued to fall from the skies around them. Ice sculptures of all kinds - from the local wildlife that lived in the forests and high in the mountains, to more exotic animals and creatures. A number of them seemed to have colours worked through them to highlight attributes and aspects of them, and to make them stand out. And every so often... a number of them they seemed to move. A stag's head might turn, a lynx might inch forward, a bird's wing outstretched. Ice orbs like the ones that had been in the tunnel leading to this room laid around the outskirts beyond the seating bubbles. There were benches for those who didn't quite want one of the bubbles, and taller standing tables around the edges as well.

Cleanly dressed servers circulated trays of drinks and wines to suit a number of tastes, and multiple canapes were brought around on trays. There was a stage near one end of the room, and on it was room for a good-sized band that was playing with a number of the more traditional instruments of Sol'Valen, from the aulos to the harp to the kithara to the lyre. The rhythm of the music was well-suited to the more formal ballroom dancing. And in the thick of it, was the Princess of Thorns that was happily greeting and welcoming guests that came in and approached. She had elected to forego a herald to announce arrivals; choosing instead a more intimate feeling for this winter wonderland.

Akantha wore a sleek, blue and white gown that shimmered and shone with runeforged beads and exquisite fabrics, with a fairly full skirt that drifted just off of the ground. Long blonde hair was swept up and with multiple soft braids and gathered at the nape of her neck, and she wore a tiara of crystals and pearls that seemed to have taken on an organic shape as if to resemble the way ice froze on a window. She was in her element here, socializing and mingling, and the snow, far more than ever occurred in Silfanore, lended to a more cozy setting than one might have expected.

Perhaps Kala enjoyed places like Silfanore and Solunarium because while she was often there working—her devilish assistant thought she was trying to undermine the Minister of Trade, but she was honestly trying to support him as he began to ail until such time as he decided himself to step down—there wasn't the added pressure of Kalzasi, where their family was always performing. They had to do the House proud, but not so proud that undue attention came to their remote mountain fastness.

She hadn't toed that line very well at all, but she hadn't asked for Naori's call, nor to be summoned to Atoria. Kala had wanted wings and instead been given wings, some abilities only held by the Firstborn of their race, the seed of divinity, and a quest. So far, very few were aware of her divinity; that was not a revelation she was ready to be general. At two-and-twenty, she was still juggling far too much for that to be in the public awareness.

Also, it was nice to have a friend specifically invite her to a party from halfway across the continent of Ailizane. Princess Akantha was, she thought, a friend. They were new friends, of course, and anything could happen in early days. Sometimes she wondered if she was merely a novelty being collected like her plush dolls, but then Kala overthought everything and everyone as she tried to balance on that precipice between her mortality and the yawning abyss of an unknown eternity ahead.

Thankfully, she had Kaus.

The pair of them arrived quite early. She was only too happy to be unfashionably early if it meant fewer people would hear her announced. Then, once she arrived, she thought she should have asked Akantha about it beforehand. There were no announcements. This was grand, but informal—at least in Sol'Hytori terms.

Perhaps they played into being the novelty of the season. They came attired as white swan from one of her favorite ballets, only Kaus' haute couture cosplay was genderbent. As Avialae, they hardly felt the cold, and so no cloaks were worn and much skin was shown, pale as the feathers and silk. They shone with more than crystal beads; their wings were arrayed in magic to make them seem not just magical but something out of time and legend.

Here, Kala was learning how to have plausible deniability about her wings. Someone must have told her that Animus couldn't give her the wings she wanted as a child, but Akantha assured her that it could. Now she felt a touch foolish for going all the way to Atoria to demand her birthright, but then she didn't know if a mage borrowing wings would be able to give birth to Avialae as Kala was assured that she could.

Motherhood was sometimes on her mind, but there were so many things happening that she had put those to the side even as she allowed a prince to court her. She had misgivings there, as well, and didn't know if they were just the normal ones a young woman had or entirely out of scope because of her anxieties about apotheosis.

Kaus returned to her side as she was examining the aetheric patterns superimposed upon an animated ice sculpture, wanting to intuit the trick so she could show Hilana someday. Her eyebrow rose as he brought her a flute of sparkling wine. She thought something to him about his costume and another person in Solunarium that made him flush through the delicate pigments that made his face seem all the more cygnine.

"A cup full of stars," he declared it, remembering how she had described her first sip of the stuff. But lately he joked about it being a holy beverage for her devotees.

He had been surprised when he had received the invitation. Sol'Valen, the Kingdom of the Eternal Sun, was a land of myth and wonder. In the world of royals and politics, the last thing that Talon had expected was to receive an invite to the private party of the eldest daughter of Sol'Valen's ruling monarch. A prince-elect he might have been as Shinsei to Karam, Kalzasi was barely a minor realm in the scope of grandeur compared to the vast and ancient lands of Sol'Valen. It had been Aoren who had pointed out to him his other royal title.

The Dragon Houses of Sol'Valen and Solunarium may have had their dragon princes but there was only one Prince of Dragons.

It was not something that Talon honestly gave much thought but he was beginning to realize it was something he should give more weight to. The entire reason that he had come to the ancient elven kingdom was because of a gift that had passed through the hands of Avatar undoubtedly on the command of his divine father.

Talon touched that very gift which hung around his neck. A silver gemstone that shone with an inner light. It hung from an artfully crafted medallion that was connected with silver and onyx medals fashioned to drape across Talon's chest. It was as heavily warded as Talon's full mastery of spellcraft allowed. He did not know the full scope of what it could do but he was not going to let it out of his sight while abroad.

Breathe, beloved. Breathe.” Aoren placed a hand gently at his mid-back. His husband rubbed lightly at a knot between his shoulder blades, prompting him to fluff his wings and relax his posture. The two of them were making their way down the tunnel to the winter ballroom. Talon had been nervous all day. He had not been able to quite place why. It had been Aoren, again, who pointed out that Sol'Valen and the war for Silfanore had been tied to the end of Arcas first life. He had not returned to the Kingdom of the Eternal Sun since that time. The many tangled emotions and memories that were both distant and too near the surface had caused Talon to become a tangled mess of anxiety. Through the Bond however, Aoren was helping to steady him.

The two of them wore mirroring outfits. A pair of finely tailored suits with dress slacks and polished black shoes. The jackets were frosted with crystal down from the shoulders and to the forearms. While Aoren's was a combination of red and white, Talon's was blue and white. Talon had pulled his hair back into his customary ponytail whereas Aoren was letting his hair fall freely. Completing Talon's attire was a halo of light that crowned his head, shining softly. It was not a full manifestation of his nimbus and doubtless any who looked upon him would know what it was, not simply a trick of Masquerade. He had no reason to hide who or what he was.

Yet he was still filled with trepidation about making appearances in a kingdom that, for at least part of him, held so many memories.

We should probably greet our hostess.” Aoren nudged him out of his own head. Talon let out a breath, grabbed two flutes of champagne from a server nearby, handed one to his husband and then joined him in approaching the Princess of Thorns.

The evening is proving to be a beautiful one, Your Royal Highness.” Talon inclined his head to Akantha. Aoren gave a bow beside him. They had never met her before but it was quite clear, based on her retinue and having overheard others approaching her, that this was Akantha Sol'Eilran.

Thank you, for the invitation.

Akantha saw Kala and Kaus arrive in their swan-seeming outfits, and had to smile to see it. She got the connotation immediately - when Lady Kala visited, either on business or because a courier delivered a note to her that the Princess felt she should come and either see something or watch something or attend something... and even if it was on business first and foremost, Akantha tended to know when she was there, and invitations would be waiting. The petite blonde noblewoman had told her that she wanted to learn more about Hytori culture, and the best way to learn was to immerse one's self in it. As such, there was always a plethora of opportunities, and if there wasn't, the Hytori made them. But they shared a love of theatre and dance, and she knew of the Swan ballet. The outfits were well-tailored, accessorized to the skies, and complimented each other very well. She was pleased that Kaus was attired in the gender-bent garment; she had certainly forced her own younger siblings and even Rhydian into dresses on more than one occasion...

The sculptures were an intricate blend of Scrivening, Masquerade, and Elementalism. Semblance would help Kala figure them out, and crack the code, such as it was. Inasmuch as she wanted to motion the other two over, she was in the middle of meeting and greeting those who had come in and were waiting to talk to her - while she likely wouldn't get to everyone tonight, she was going to make time for her friends. She could enjoy the visit and later on while they stayed over. Soren might come and visit with Kaus later, depending on what he was up to... she could usually drag one of her brothers along, depending on what they were doing, or Kaus might visit the winged Hytori regiment. The weather wasn't particularly suited to her flying nook, but with the right wards...

And then, of course, was the other pair from Karnor who had shown up, unexpectedly, but at what was essentially the right time. Akantha had not been there when they were received, otherwise she certainly would have nudged her way in to meet them. She was always keen to meet visiting royalty, because they might well be those she may need to deal with in the future, if she eventually took the crown. And even if she didn't, and she was positioned like her Aunt Ékhidna, her father's sister, she would likely be seeing them in the future anyway. It was important to build relationships, or at the very least, make their acquaintance and learn about them. Hytori were long-lived, and might well see a few generations of other races come and go during their own lifetime, but it was important all the same. The two of them were rather dapper in their suits that matched their own physical features and complemented their partner. Fire and ice, dragon and draegir. She would need to extend compliments to their tailors for the fits and design.

But in any event, it would have been completely and utterly rude to not extend an invitation to a social event for the visiting highborn and his husband, especially when she had already invited two Avialae who she was sure was familiar with Aoren and Talon. Kala held a government position in Kalzasi, and Talon had been in line for Shokaze before ceding to the one who was eventually elected to the position. As she understood it, he had been appointed to his previous position by the new leader. There was also the fact that he was known to be the draegir, Arcas, reborn.

She was just encouraging some of her Val'Hytori guests to enjoy themselves, pointing out a few others that they loosely knew, when the much taller pair approached her. She inclined her head in greeting with a warm smile. "Shinsei Talon, Lord Aoren, good evening. You are most welcome, and I am glad that you could make it. I know our winters in Silfanore are quite mild compared to those that you experience back in Karnor, but perhaps this reminds you a bit of home." She didn't need her Sembling Sight to see that he was slightly uneasy, which was understandable. She knew that they had been here for a few days, but all things considered... At the same time, Akantha tapped into her Illumite shard in her bracelet to produce a few motes of light that danced around the siblings. If they looked back to their source, they would find the Princess waving to them, inviting the pair over to her and the other two. "I imagine that you are both familiar with Lady Kala and Lord Kaus of Starfall?"

There were many ways in with the younger children of Akshara Leukos were odd; the one most obvious currently was how much they were the stereotypical set of twins, having their own language of glances and gestures. They just also happened to have a soul-deep telepathic bond as well. It was known that they were of Avialae lineage, but the reality of her wings and how she got them remained a closely guarded secret. Here, even a master sembler would see her wings and think them a clever combination of shape-shifting and glamour, perhaps.

She might no longer be Queen Regent, but the death of her Shokaze hadn't made Sahfri any less the Iron Queen in manner if not actual status. Kala tried to remain on good terms with the Dowager Queen, and the secret of her divinity was buried deeper still, the secret of her wings a distraction more than anything, although she knew those would be enough to endanger her in the right circumstances.

They looked like people pulled out of a fairy tale, especially when Akantha sent a shower of golden motes to dance about them. Unsure whether it was just another delightful touch of the party's décor, they looked around and Kaus caught the princess waving. As soon as he saw her, Kala knew, and turned to look, to smile, and to nod.

The twins turned as one to walk toward her.

Their clothes were easy enough to move in. If they had learned anything from the parties of Kalzasi, it was that one had to be ready to defend against the nation's enemies even in the most secure places of the capital at a moment's notice. But they had been to Silfanore before and so several of the guests already knew them and as such they had to politely stop and say a few words before indicating that Akantha had called them over.

"Your Royal Highness," the greeted their hostess with an appropriate bow from a respectful distance. Kala continued, "Thank you for inviting us. The event is, de rigueur, fantastic." And Kaus, "My Lords, it is good to see familiar faces abroad."

Kala raised her glass to them, eyes finally settling on Aoren. She was going to learn at least a word of draconic tonight if it killed her. The fate of their race depended upon it, after all.

It is a welcome reminder of the north. The decorations are very well put together. Did you arrange them yourself?” Talon's attention was drawn to a few of the ice sculptures, interested in the mechanisms and enchantments behind devising such things. His fascination made the red haired dragon beside him chuckle.

Don't mind him, Your Highness. Any chance to study the arcane and he becomes bright eyed and bushy tailed.” Aoren watched as the motes of light zipped from around Akantha's wrist, zooming over to another pair of guests. The both of them were pleasantly surprised to see the Leukos twins. Talon took in the attire, the elegant sweep of swan feathers and complimentary style received a hum of appreciation.

Kala. Kaus. It is always good to see you.” Talon gave a nod to the both of them. As Kala's eyes settled upon Aoren, the raven winged man laughed.

Oh, I know that look.” Aoren shook his head with a smile. “Yes, my lady. Yes. We will most definitely practice your pronunciation while I am here.

The fires in Aoren's eyes danced in amusement. There was no faulting Kala for her desire to learn more of Draconic. The language could be extremely taxing to learn not just mentally but the raw energy it took to speak the language to truest meaning with focus and intent took a toll. Aoren took a sip of his champagne. Talon quirked a brow, looking between the two.

You are teaching her Draconic?” Talon could learn it. Far easier than a mortal could but he had not had the opportunity or really the thought to learn. The benefit, and perhaps drawback, to being telepathically bonded to his husband meant that there had never been a need to. When Aoren nodded, Talon smiled.

Lady Kala is one of Kalzasi's rising stars.” Talon looked to Akantha. “She impressed my mother and my late father to such a degree that she is perhaps the youngest of the realm’s senior ministers.

”I didn't design them myself, no, but I explained to some of our Magisters what I wanted, and they made them happen," Akantha explained. Thanks to her time with Ionsōra, she had a well-rounded education when it came to the wildlife of Sol'Valen, and the ancient Hytori had given her some other ideas for the rest. "I told them what animals I wanted represented, and they blended Elementalism, Kinetics, Scrivening, and Masquerade. The base sculpture was made with Elementalism, and the movements are a blend of Kinetics and Elementalism that have been tasked through Scrivening. The lights that accentuate them come from the effects of Masquerade. While Light is of course its own Element," she inclined her head to Talon there - his Elemental Plane, after all, as Arcas. "We felt that Masquerade would better suit the effects I wanted from the statues better." That wasn't to say that Light wasn't represented - it was used in multiple areas, from overhead to the ice orbs around the edges. "If you would like, on another day during your stay, I could make arrangements for the mages who made them to give you a demonstration?"

While she hadn't done them herself, she was familiar with the theory required to make them happen, and her coordinators took care of the rest. She was pleased that they had garnered interest from her guests, as well as showing off some of the skills of her people. She may have put it towards entertainment rather than more utilitarian efforts, but there was something to be said for decadence and being able to exhibit their abilities in a fun, challenging way. She had her collective of makers, and her list of entertainers was just as long. Who she didn't know, her coordinators did. Besides, this gave the Shinsei of Kalzasi something to focus on: it might help dispel some of the nerves he was experiencing and let him have a good time.

She had expected the two pairs to know each other, considering Kala served in the government of Kalzasi and was familiar with the Iron Queen, from their talks, so it had stood to reason that they knew Talon. In politics it was never just what you knew, but who you knew. "Of course. I am so glad that the two of you could come," she smiled at the blond twins. "It is good to see you both again," she inclined her head at Kaus' praise. "The outfits go so well with your complexion and your wings," she did raise her eyebrow at the set of Kala's expression, looking back to Talon and Aoren. Well, then, there was a story here, and she wanted to know what it was.

She had a intrigued expression as Aoren laughed, looking up at the tall redhead with the raven wings. Her pronunciation? Ohhh. The dragon. Only for Talon to confirm her guess. Well, then, wasn't that something? She knew that such a language was exceedingly difficult, but for Lady Kala to be learning it... That was a considerable undertaking, and another mark in her friend's favour. "She is quite brilliant, isn't she?" Akantha agreed with Talon, smiling at the petite blonde. "Lady Kala and Lord Kaus have been coming here since Glade for various meetings, and she's proven herself to be quite adept, and a fast learner. Lord Kaus certainly holds his own with our winged Hytori soldiers. They've been wonderful representatives of Kalzasi's government. Your father and the Dowager Queen have a good eye for people."

Truth be told, Akantha enjoyed having them visit. Kala had been summoned... well, invited to various shows, festivals, and events, and she had roped her brothers into visiting with Kaus from time to time - there had been more than party where she had dragged Sorononar with her so that Kaus also had someone to talk to while their respective sisters were also busy. Sure, Kaus did well with the soldiers and putting them through their paces while Akantha brought Kala to one of her favourite Maker's fashion shows, but there was plenty for the gentlemen around Silfanore as well. Her brothers might not have wings, but they were decidedly athletic in their own rights.

Kaus laughed lightly at the compliments from all sides, points of high color on his cheek. His ebullient nature was different, and some thought complementary, to his twin's. She had been a firecracker in her youth, but had stilled that violence to be more practical, more calculating. Perhaps it was no wonder she had ended up in the Ministry of Finance. But still, she was Fire and he was Air. The Elements had chosen.

While Kaus laughed, Kala spoke.

She bowed again to Aoren. "You are most generous and gracious as always, my lord. The work is long and life so short."

And for Talon, a gentle correction, "Junior ministers, my lord. I exceed my mandate when I work beyond the borders of Karnor." She didn't want to say it, but her superior seemed to be at an age where he was content to coast a long with minimal effort, sitting on his laurels instead of making the efforts necessary to increase Kalzasi's importance on the global economic scene. But she didn't want to shame him after decades of keen service, and so she worked around him where she was able, and he had gotten over his affront when she returned from Solunarium with the foundation of a new trade agreement.

Kala didn't know when the time for secrecy would pass, nor the time for mortal endeavors. She wanted to make her mark as a mortal woman before mortality fell away completely. Talon and Aoren, at least, knew why she sought to master the tongue of dragons, but while Kala hadn't made Sahfri happy by staying under lock and key, she did keep sensitive information to herself and her most trusted. Unlocking Garel's secrets would take time. She only hoped she learned the trick of it in time to give Marda Ahtivin and her mother the wings they deserved, and hopefully some of the Avialae strength to make their later years more comfortable.

And last, but not least, for Akantha, "We will have to find time while I am here to discuss what everyone is wearing." She offered a little bow of thanks for the compliments. "You, of course, look stunning. You haven't gotten bored of looking stunning, I see." She smiled.

"Did Lord Talon come all this way for your party as well?" she asked, including everyone in this bit. The intense fashion talk would have to happen one-on-one. It wouldn't be polite to bore those with less patience for the topic. "Or is there a diplomatic mission as well?"

Fascinating.” Talon listened to her explanation of the constructs with eager attention. There were similar constructs in Dawnhold but those had been the product of archmagic. When he had pulled the citadel from the twisting nebula of the greater reaches of the Aetherium, it had been with a vision of a place that was perfectly suited to the needs of the Dawnmartyr Order. He had possessed a vague awareness of its formation. The aspects of it finer details had been filled in by his subconscious connection to that realm of infinite possibilities. The part of himself that always had one foot firmly set within it had plucked the aspects of his cathedral realm from infinite times and spaces to be formed in this one.

I would be very interested to learn. Thank you, Your Royal Highness.” As Akantha lauded Kala and Kaus with praises, Talon could not say that he was surprised. The twins of House Leukos were some of the most promising young Avialae in all of Kalzasi. As low of a profile that their broader House had kept, the two of them were the subject of much fascination among the upper echelons of Kalzasi's nobility.

I have no doubt that with more time, they will both achieve even greater things than they have now.” At Kala's gentle correction, Talon smiled over the rim of his champagne glass before taking a sip.

Lady Kala is too polite to say it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that she will soon gently nudge her elder into his much-deserved retirement. The Crystal Lady knows, the man deserves to spend the rest of his years around his grandchildren. He has been counting the crown's coin since before my father was born.” Talon shook his head. He was well acquainted with the Chief Minister of Finance. A no-nonsense man who was quite happy among his ledgers, books, scrolls and endless conversations about funding and guiding the city’s economy. With Kala having taken over as his direct junior however, there was a renewed focus on building beyond what Kalzasi's current situation was. It had breathed new life into the city's trade.

Talon gave an appreciative glance over Akantha's apparel as Kala complimented her. When the conversation turned away from fashion and back to him, he shook his head.

I was not expected in any capacity, save for the letter I sent to Sol'Valen's scholars in search of knowledge.” Talon touched the jewel around his neck. “A gift, from my Divine Father. One that I have been unable to find any record of in the libraries of House Briathos or the Circle of Spells. I am hoping to find answers here.

The silvery gemstone sparkled softly and Talon dared not withdraw any of the wards around it.

"It would be my pleasure. We will find a time that works with your plans while you are here." That was settled - she could make arrangements to invite the pair of them to the Palace for a demonstration. Kala would doubtless like one, too; Akantha had seen her studying one of the statues while she was greeting guests. She would see how packed the young noblewoman's schedule was this trip with her various meetings, and she would continue to bring her around to different affairs and events to further her education on Sol'Valen's culture. If it was on two separate occasions, so much the better: that worked just fine for the Princess. She could visit with both sets of guests, and what one might have enjoyed, the other may have had less interest in.

"I am certain that a promotion will be forthcoming in the near future, if that is the case," Akantha sounded approving as she smiled at Kala. "And thank you - one can never get tired of art, can they? And that is what fashion is," she wouldn't exhaust the patience of her guests by going on about it. It may have been one of her favourite subjects, and as well-dressed as the Shinsei and his husband were, she didn't know enough about them yet to know if such things were to their interest. She did know that she would be taking her mnemonosyte to study their suits, and see about having something inspired by them made for her brothers.

As Talon touched the necklace, Akantha activated her Rune of Semblance to inspect it up close. It was substantial, and what she found was that it was deeply, deeply warded. Despite her training from her mother on sidestepping wards while investigating the aura of something, and deciphering what each of those many layers were blocking, she was not able to tell much about it beyond the fact that it was a magical artifact of significant age. She was sure there were those here that could figure out such a thing, particularly in her maternal family; and considering its age it might well be noted in their libraries. Sol'Valen's storied history eclipsed the rest of the known world, after all, and the archives and libraries were exhaustive and substantial. "We are glad you elected to come and visit. When my father mentioned Prince Talon's and Lord Aoren's arrival, I thought that they might enjoy the ball. But it is an exquisite piece. I am certain that our scholars and magisters will be able to shed some light on your amulet."

That wasn't, of course, to dismiss the libraries and records of his own House or the Circle - but there was no denying the difference in age, and when one was dealing with such a piece, it might well be something thousands of years back. And to find that sort of information... this was where one might come.

"Do you plan on staying with us for a while?" she inquired of both pairs of winged Northerners. She was sure Kala would be staying for a week or so, though she didn't know the duration of Talon's stay. That likely depended on the investigation into his amulet. She did, of course, have some outings for Kala planned to work with her busy schedule, a ballet recital and an orchestral performance... but perhaps Talon and Aoren might enjoy something else.
