Both Sides of the Coin
Ash 59, 123
Valentin Valentin's reign of terror continued throughout Valensier. Business after business was hit, rich and poor alike huddling in dark offices, staring at their doors, fearing that inevitable *knock knock knock* which signaled that their time had come. The OIR wrung blood from every stone, and when the auditors departed each victim's books had a lot more red in them. Still, as each shell-shocked taxpayer reeled in the wake of the terror, none realized that they were all very, very lucky.
Because they weren't Allstead Shipping Company.
The auditors descended upon the shipping concern like a swarm of locusts. A dozen men and women marched into the (now sparsely-appointed) offices like an officer corps, each bearing the terrible tools of destruction for which they were known; pencils, pads of paper, measuring tape, and tiny black books filled with dark financial truths. They terrorized the poor majordomo until he was nothing but a sobbing wreck, they held select interviews with the captains of each dock team at the railyard, and asked a million pointed questions of the concern's flummoxed accountant, though he fared rather better in terms of his dignity. Valentin himself made a point of tracking down Frau Allstead and asking difficult questions about her life, her relationships, her deceased family and so forth. At the end, the auditor made it exceptionally clear that the OIR had not been fooled by any of the staff's protestations and explanations- and a reckoning would not be postponed indefinitely.
They contacted Darus of Haqs that very evening. Louis Gerhard's firm, blocky hand gave no indication of the horrors the trio had just faced, or the pressure applied to push them into Aurin's clutches. It said only:
Darus. My employer has consented to take you up on your offer. Meet me at the trainyard tonight to discuss procedures and remuneration.
Upon hearing this, Valentin only smiled, and said to Aurin- "The wheels of the gods grind slowly, but they grind extremely small. Take him for everything he's worth, and watch for the knife at your back."
