70th Ash, Year 124

As the season was getting cooler, Hilana was preparing some more of the hearty meals. Lia was less inclined towards leftovers than she was, but her lentil and sausage stew made a big pot, and she could take it for lunches over the next few days as well. She had the kitchen to herself; Kalor was with Lia while she was working on her sewing. The cats were hanging around, basking in the sunlight. Tiaz was on his perch, and Fiya was in the middle of a shed, and as such, she was soaking away in a moss-filled basket to help get that skin loose. She hummed to herself as she got to work on making the vegetable stock first: carrots and celery were washed and chopped and weighed before going into a large pot along with a large onion that was cut into eighths. Water and bay leaf was added to the pot, and it was put on the back of the stove to simmer while she started on the next part of the recipe.
She had set the lentils to soaking the night before, to soften them up and help reduce the cooking time, and she left those in the water for the time being while she got out more carrots, a red onion, and young spinach. The carrots were peeled and quartered, then chopped again into smaller pieces and set aside in a mixing bowl. The red onion was next, and she deftly peeled it after cutting off one end. This one required a nice dice, which meant some fancier knifework than the carrots had required. She sliced the onion, not quite all the way through the bottom, before turning the knife and starting to cut the slices. The previous knife cuts, when combined with these new movements, led to neatly diced pieces that would be going into the same bowl as the carrots.
