22 Glade 125

The day after the dinner, after the roof, after Kaus had reached inside their bond and stretched Raithen open, the twins had left for home. They had kissed him and said they would be back once other obligations were attended to. It was just another day.

Things kept happening that made Raithen sure, while they were, that they would change everything, change him, that he would be different after. But he never was. He had thought, with Khyan, with Finn, with Kaus... Each felt individual and vast; all encompassing in the brief moments of the connection. But they had come to nothing. Was he stupid, for thinking that one encounter that felt like everything to him could mean as much to another?

When it felt like he was being crushed, everyone knew, his family, outsiders, and all acted as though everything was just as it was supposed to be, no one objected or even seemed to notice that anything was other than ordinary. So, it must be normal, and right, what happened to him and the aftermath, or lack thereof.

The urge to run that have grown inside him at Hilana's dinner table grew in strength as he felt Kaus' bond fade as distance grew between them. Like being hollowed out, one portal jump at a time. Hurling himself after them, ripping his way through the slipspace was not a viable action. Not socially acceptable.

Sitting at dinner, listening to his family talk between them of political things while his insides were slowly grinding him apart, he happened to hear mention of his brother's beloved in his mission to the cursed Ecithian Commonwealth. The idea formed in him without really passing through his brain for processing. Excusing himself from the table without anyone noticing, he went to his room and put together a pack of the new things he couldn't do without.

The mirror he used for speaking to Hilana, and now that his Traversion was powerful enough, theoretically others. Two sets of clothing from his mercenary days that would survive harsh travel, his spear and fléchettes. A dozen more, small things that one needed to survive in the desert. A note was left for his mother, explaining where he was going, that he wanted to learn what he could from the enemies and support Finn in his work. She could call him back, as could Holy Avaerys, to whom he was bound. But he would leave. The way was long, hard, empty, and he wanted that.

Wrapping a keffiyeh around his head and face, as the sun set, he took flight. The way out of the city was well know, and for many miles outside, he had flown and mapped all his adult life. Beyond were places he did not know, and he wanted those, the places that did not know him.

Using Kinetics with his flight he could have propelled himself at speeds beyond what any living creature could achieve unaided by magic, but that would take him to his destination too soon. The test of the desert was what he wanted, the hardness of it, the fight.

So he flew, braving the strongest winds, the storms of sand that would have scored the skin from his bones had he not had such skill with Kinetics, and even then, it was a struggle. The struggle was the point. When landed during the days, making what shelter he could with nothing but what was within him, fighting nature and wild creatures for access to water and food.

Weeks in, when he felt like he had passed the tests of the desert, each as they came, and he needed something new to work on, he turned to his newer rune. Traversion hopping himself from place to place recklessly dropped him into new problems every day, even as his ability to propel himself through the slipspace grew stronger. Sometimes he made Railways and then shot himself through them with Kinetics so fast it felt like his form might be coming apart just before he came out the other side. He wished, in those moments as he felt the aether that connected the particles of his being stretching near to breaking, that they would. Shattering apart, becoming everything and nothing, drifting forever without any notion that any one mote had ever been part of a person, it would be peaceful.

There were lots of ways to connect Traversion and Kinetics, just as there had been many ways to connect Flight with Kinetics. All of them required him to think in three demissions, to understand movement, weight, and space. By the time he began to slip through villages, through people, as though they were nothing, he felt stripped down to his bones, hard and solid as he had not felt in a lone time, maybe ever. His body was thinner, but not dangerously so, he was as good a hunter as any but the best of the deep desert Vastian tribesmen. Hilana would have been proud of him if she had seen some of the things he had done, but he hadn't told her when she had called him via the mirrors. Mostly, he had asked about her and spoken little of himself as his face darkened and he grew lean.

He stopped utilizing the longer slipspace jumps as he neared the capital, flying instead, using Kinetics and small jumps in tandem until the three skills felt like one in his head. Landing just outside the walls, so as not to be shot at, he explained that he was a messenger from his family to Finn, using all the proper addresses of person and positions. The guards did not like it, but they let him in and even directed him to where Finn was living.

When he showed up, the servants looked at him as though he were a starving mutt showing up to beg, but they knew enough not to deny his name. When he was led to the room Finn was in, he unwrapped the face covering and grinned, white teeth a shock against his now deeply tanned skin.

"Hello, brother. I hope you don't mind me dropping in. I thought I might be useful."

The sun was beginning to cross the threshold of the horizon, afternoon ceding the sky to evening. Time passed, but Finn abided at his desk with only a few tapers lit to read by. He found them more relaxing than the enchanted lamps sometimes, the scent of beeswax sublimated into the air, the warm light that reacted so strongly to changes in the environment.

Finn had promised he would always listen via his Rune, the better to know if peril would soon be knocking at his door. He felt a disturbance, but no true alarm and so he continued his reading, his work. There had been a convocation of the senate the day previous and he was researching a few legal precedents for context to offer a more nuanced update to Phocion.

A familiar melody in the hallway, but he was familiar with all the melodies in the Prædium Solunarii.

He looked up and Raithen was there, looking as though he had gone native with Hilana for a Searing season, but it was only Glade and...

"Rai...?"

Normally, he didn't delve deeply into people, but nobody had told him Raithen was coming and his work here was so important, so delicate, he reached past the smile to the raw nerve below. Standing, a legal text fell to the floor beside him. A few strides and he was there, strong hands on Raithen's shoulders, blue eyes intent.

He didn't see everything before he realized he oughtn't to be probing Raithen's secret heart, but he saw enough. His gaze softened into a compassion and empathy so strong it must have made the embattled bird ache inside.

Suddenly, Finn had his Avialae brother-in-law crushed in a bear hug.

"It's good to see you, little bird," he growled. "You surprised me. And you need a bath."

Little bird. Echoes of their adventure in the Aetherium rang in the phrase.

When Finn crossed to him, Raithen wrapped the man into a strong hug as soon as it seemed as though it was acceptable. A season of loneliness clutching for connection, but only briefly before he pulled back to see and be seen again. It was good to see a familiar face, hear a voice that instantly made him feel safe and at home.

"Twins, have you been wrestling with the natives this whole time?" This he said as he gripped the new muscle growth over Finn's arms and shoulders. The man had been slim when he'd first arrived in Solunarium, now he was practically burly. He had grown stronger over the time Raithen had known him, but changes when apart always seem more dramatic. His own were likely similarly surprising.

Laughing, he nodded at the comment to his scent and appearance.

"I do, and a brother to wash my back. Though I would understand if I wanted me scrubbed and hosed down outside first."

The sympathetic look he could pass over for worry at his state, at least, he could pretend it so.

"I wasn't needed at home, and I know your work here is important. I am good as an aid to such work. I figured, in a new place, I could learn to be even better."

Glancing down at himself, he laughed again, "And I guess I wanted to test myself. Against the desert, against something that didn't care who I was. Does that make sense?"

Maybe it would to Finn, who had shown in multiple ways that he wanted to prove himself and earn his place, even though much of it had been given and he need not have. The spirit of it was in them both, a family trait, even if they weren't blood kin.

"Almost every day, I walk up to the Temple of Raxen where the Arbiters are training, look for the biggest Ork and punch him in the face." He winked. "Training against Orkhan berserkers might be bulking me up?" Flexing an arm, he looked at it curiously. He, who saw himself every day in the mirror, could not see the changes.

"Nonsense," he scoffed, "if you tie them up, they won't get their work done and the Prædium will be in shambles in no time." He grinned, tucked his hand behind a wing and against the small of his back, guiding him toward the door and the baths.

As he listened, he nodded. He wondered if it was an Avialae thing, needing to test oneself against dangerous terrain; the Warren March of the Synnekar, Raithen and the Expanse.

"Well, you're welcome to stay, even if I know you're just here to molest a certain starlit highness..." He glanced over his shoulder, but his platinum shadow was apparently taking a bit of a break from bodyguard duty while he was in the safety of the Prædium.

If he wasn't probing Raithen's symphony, though, he was listening with his ears and with his heart.

"I sneak back and forth via portal now—for debriefings, for conjugal visits, for necessary attendances—but I remember flying from the City to the border on Kherdroth before I was sent here as an official legate. It was rather an amazing experience."

The dirty, sunbaked Avialae laughed aloud at the unexpected declaration of the special training protocols that had allowed the human to bulk up so quickly. Raithen knew it was a joke but it did seem like a good way to learn to fight the natives. If it wouldn't cause an international incident, he might try it himself.

The easy touch after so long without, both in the immediate past of being alone in the desert and the fact that familiar touch was not usually something done, and if so, not comfortably, his whole life, was so nice it made him realize how tired he actually was. Rai almost slung his arm around Finn's shoulders but decided, on second thought, that this would only spread his unpleasant scent over his friend.

"Wha..?" It took his mind a moment to realize who it was Finn must be talking about and then he turned to look more directly at his host.

"Oh. I didn't actually... Not that I mind cause..." Clearing his throat, Raithen laughed again, at himself this time, before turning the expression into a cheeky grin. "I don't suppose he'll be waiting attendance on the baths?"

The dirty dux would not have minded at all had his brother-in-law been probing his symphony. So used was he to having family inside his head and heart whenever he was near them that he would be been confused to know that Finn wasn't using his abilities.

"The land is..." Too many words swam up to complete for description, "a lot. Amazing, terrifying, testing. It truly belongs to the Twins. I am honored that it allowed me to cross it and didn't eat me alive. It did try, sometimes."

Raithen's mind mapped the route they took without any conscious intention to do so, learning this new palace in case the knowledge would be required by those he owed loyalty later.

"How is your own testing ground treating you?" Ecith was a different sort of test, but surely no less daunting in its own way.

"Arky has been complaining that there aren't enough comely elves about," he said, "and you qualify for mitigating that particular problem." He laughed, a person capable of aesthetic appreciation without a lascivious agenda.

"A walkabout and a sort of pilgrimage, eh? I'm tempted to show you His crown, but He might think I was drawing worship from where it belongs." He chuckled. Many Solunarians found his relationship with their God unsettling; while he revered the Golden Twin, he often seemed cavalier about Him. Deus had yet to strike him down, though, so he didn't think he was trespassing far.

The Prædium Solunarii had modest facilities. In the apodyterium, Finn too disrobed; a bath would help relax him, as well, and it was a perfect opportunity for them to catch up. A servus blinked at Raithen's filthy clothes, but they would be laundered post haste and something would be found for him in the meantime.

There was grit all over him, even where his clothing had nominally protected him. A dirty bird, indeed.

Finn took a cursory shower, the better to keep those public—at least to those residing in the Prædium—clean. He didn't mind a little extra time under the pressured streams of water while Raithen sluiced off the worst of it. He waved away the help of a servus, at least for this part. A thrill of alarum ran through the slave, and Finn instinctively read his symphony as he froze, ready to offer Raithen help.

"Oh. They don't know how to groom your feathers," he said. "Ah... I don't know how you feel about it. The Synnekar of Kalzasi are particular about who they let groom them. Their wings, anyway. If you would prefer, I can help. You will just have to talk me through it. But... that's later, I suppose."

Raithen's grin at the idea of being what the starlit prince wanted did not attempt to hide the lascivious nature of his interest in his fellow elven royal. The pair had spent time together on several occasions after the Dux had learned the prince's true identity, but they hadn't coupled in a sexual sense. They had made use of slaves and willing partners in proximity to each other, but both of them wanted what the other was unwilling to give. It created an interesting sort of tension between them, as though each was waiting for the other to break with no intention of doing it themselves.

They had not met since the prince had become sworn to Finn, and Raithen wasn't sure as to the nature of that relationship, though he had to assume it stopped short of sexual, if only because 'Arky' was still alive.

Raithen had seen Finn manifest of Divine will before, and had been dutifully, and helplessly, in awe. That it was Finn doing it had leant a sense of comfort to the intensity that the Avialae did not feel when in the presence of the God Himself. That he might dedicate his experiences to the Divinities he worshiped had not occurred to him. He was so used now to Their direct commands that offering them anything of himself without being bidden didn't fit into his idea of obedience.

Peeling out of his protective garments, much more than he usually wore, Raithen left them for servi to dispose of, for they were beyond wearing again. Once he was in just his dirt-saturated skin he looked around to find where he could pre-wash before stepping into any of the tubs. The water would be immediately unsuitable for Finn if he were to do so without at least a good rinse. Thankfully, Finn also went to pre-wash and he was able to follow and follow suit, if to a significantly greater degree.

After spinning under the delightfully pressured water for a minute, he waved over a servus and was confused by their hesitation until Finn informed him of the issue.

"Oh. Hm. Just leave them, I'll see to them later?" There was a little hesitation in his own voice due to the fact that, while he could groom himself, he had never been as dirty before and wasn't actually sure if anything special was needed. Maybe Kaus would know, he should call him later with his mirror and see how he was. There was much between them, spoken and unspoken, that Raithen didn't understand but they were friends. Finn's offer made him smile and relax again.

"That would be very nice. I have trained my body servi at home, but it is odd having strangers touch them."

When the water coming off him was no longer the varying shades of the desert, he stepped out from under the water and let the attendant begin to scrub him with soap and brushes. The brushes were soft but effective and he returned to the shower to rinse before being soaped again several times before he considered himself clean enough for a soak.

Just being clean felt amazing, but he still looked eagerly to his brother to lead them to the next stage of the abutions.

As he had already exercised earlier and Raithen looked worn out, there was no reason to go into the palaestra, and as the water in the showers had been luxuriously hot, Finn ambled through the tepidarium and into the calderium. From there, they could turn one way for the dry heat, the other for the wet heat, but Finn opted to step carefully into the hot water bath. Despite the heat of Drathera, it felt wonderful to soak away the aches and pains of training and the tension that crept up on him in this high-stakes employment. He imagined it would feel like heaven for Raithen, too.

While he couldn't pleasure the Avialæ as his brother-in-law might wish, he could ensure that the hospitality of the Prædium Solunarii was a pleasurable experience. Twins willing, he and Arkænyn would get their rocks off together. The platinum prince needed to relax as well.

Once he was settled into a seat, he rubbed the hot water over his face and ran his finger through his dark hair. Then he looked at Raithen to make sure the little bird was getting comfortable too.

"Are you going to tell me why you felt the need to go on a walkabout," he asked carefully, "or tell me to mind my own fucking business?" His smile was crooked; he wouldn't take offense at the latter, nor would he make use of his Rune to pull answers out of him.

With the Rune, Zef had drilled into him certain matters of ethics where the thoughts and feelings of others were concerned. Solunarium had sharpened his code, but not replaced it.

He didn't know how to reclaim that closeness they had felt in the Ætherium, not without doing things that would upset his maritus, but he did want to be there for Raithen when he reached out to Finn.

Heaven, Raithen had no concept of, but it did feel amazing to follow Finn, admiring the changes in his body, and sink into water just shy of being painfully hot. A term he might have used to describe Finn had he not been working to keep his thoughts in places within the bounds of consent. As easily as he could have been attracted to, aroused by, his brother-in-law, it had been expressed to him plainly that such attention was unwanted. So, Raithen didn't want it either. It would be hard to even imagine seeking such against Finn's wishes.

A long sigh accompanied Raithen sinking into the water. Another came after he had ducked himself entirely under the steaming surface to reemerge.

"You are an excellent host, brother." His smile hand gone languid and almost sleepy.

Sitting up high enough to flair his wings and rest them outside the water, he placed his arms alongside them, on the edge of the tub. The question posed brought him out of the heat-haze enough to consider, but the answer he gave was accompanied by a shrug.

"I don't know. I thought maybe you could tell me." Finn, like his mother, often knew what Raithen was feeling far better than he did himself. Always being told had led to a stunting of his ability to self reflect, but he could not know what he did not know. The idea that Finn wasn't digging into his emotions never entered his head.

"I am your business, I hope. As you are mine."

Being in the water with Finn always brought back a little of what it had felt like in the Ætherium. Being in the water with Finn felt safe, safe enough that the slight anxiety that accompanied water surrounding him, even in a deep bath, was absent.

"I just needed to get away from... Maybe everything. It's probably something stupid, like wanting to go on an adventure." He self deprecated without sting, hoping to entice Finn to examine his motivations and inform him of them.

"If you are my brother," he said smoothly, but with perfect sincerity, "then my home is your home, and you must take your comfort there."

But his generous smile turned quizzical. After a moment of consideration, he nodded.

"After our trip through the Ætherium, you know me better than most in ways that are difficult to learn a person. You are welcome in my business, but you should know that your mind and heart are sacrosanct as far as I am concerned. Unless I fear some danger to you or others, I won't invade your thoughts and feelings, at least beyond surface things, without your express permission.

"But... you are troubled, and you are here in my home. You have asked, and so I will."

Finn poured into Raithen slowly, carefully, until his consciousness was resonating gently with the Avialæ's. It was like holding hands without touching. It was a warm embrace in the dark. It was like cool rain on a hot day. For all the strength in his sinews and in his Runes and his divine Emblem, there was a gentleness to Finn even as he moved into the music that made up Gaius Val'Aværyan Raithen Dux and harmonized.

"I regret that my responsibilities in Drathera have kept me from our training sessions since Ash. I have been remiss as a brother. Hm, did something happen? Was there some inciting incident that made you decide to go on an adventure by yourself? If you are confused, perhaps you ought to go back in time a bit, and relate to me your story. Then, perhaps, we will see what emotions arise. Together."
