On the Trail of Israxa [Closed]

In which the hunt continues for the Zalkyrian Horn.

Apart from the two major metropolitan centers in the kingdom, The Atraxian Expanse is home to tens of thousands of Solunarians. Some of the Vastii still hearken back to their days as nomads, roaming the open desert and braving its many trials, but most have formed settlements along the River Vasta or around nearby oases. Most of these settlements in the present day are completely self-governing, but there are a few in the vicinity of valuable resources, which are overseen by representatives of the greater kingdom. Unlike the two fortified cities of Solunarium and Tertium, many of these smaller settlements live under the constant threat of desert squalls, droughts and attacks from desert-dwelling predators, like Tusk Titans and wild wyverns.

12 Searing 125

[Closed - Pharaoh, Finn, Raithen]

Hilana had known when she had submitted her list of requested people that it may have been difficult with schedules to get everyone arranged. The young woman was taking no chances with the success of this, and perhaps it was overkill, considering her first inclination to go had been by wyvern, with her Mask, and possibly one or two others to scout Celatium before they went in with more to try to gather intelligence to understand better what they were dealing with instead of just rolling in. But decisions were made to go in what was a marvel of the type Hilana had never had the privilege of experiencing before, and since they were going to go that way, she had made up her mind after thinking about it as to whom she intended to bring with her in addition to the crews provided. She knew that she was only going to get one good shot at this - and in that case, there was no such thing was overkill.

And in some ways, as short as it was, that list was a big ask - all four of Cithaera Princeps' children were on it. She requested Phocion as Captain - he had volunteered, and she had faith in him, his skills, and his ability to make decisions. Further, he was marked by Varvara, and as Valaera had pointed out, that was an excellent ability to have when it came to commandeering the ship. She had asked for Valaera to come along for her Sembling ability and knowledge of the ship, and her coolness under fire - they had gone to the Crystal Tower together. That aside, you did not rise through the ranks of being the right hand of the Grandmaster Sembler without having the chops to back it up.

She had asked for Arvaelyn, if he was so inclined to come - he was also marked by Varvara, a grandmaster Mesmer, and while their friendship had never quite recovered from Finn's wounding, he at least tolerated her and had been friendly enough the last time she had seen him. Further, she knew if she wanted Finn along, then her best bet was to also ask Arvaelyn. She had also asked for Raithen, trusting implicitly in his abilities with kinetics and his mastery of the air. As an Avialae, the sky was his birthright. The rest of them were just tourists. He was also favoured by Avaerys, and she trusted that he would put aside whatever complicated feelings he had about Phocion and Kala aside to make this journey with them. He had had her back when they had gone to Mount Kaladon, and she knew he would have it here.

Hilana had experienced Vraedyn's sermons firsthand, and even before that, there were many stories and reputation preceded the Paterfamilias of House Vlahos. He had offered his time, and she had considered it a wise decision to take him up on it. She had seen his skills up close when they had worked on the Sceptre of Avaerys when Talon had helped re-enchant it. Further, he was Empyreal - marked by Avaerys when Phocion had been marked by Varvara. They were part of a matched set, and as she remembered seeing Phocion and Finn use their Emblems together against that voidspawn monster back at the Citadel... it was good to keep the sets together. And Finn, of course - he had made the foray abroad with her the first time with her and Khyan, and had been grievously wounded in the process. He was considered Magnatus, twice marked by Avaerys, and matched with Arvaelyn, and she knew how skilled he was with blending those separate Runes and mundane abilities.

There were multiple people she had considered asking along, but had made the decision not to, especially her foreign friends. Rickter as a magical powerhouse, but was prone to overdoing it and finessing wasn't always his strong suit. More importantly than that, his family needed him and Hilana knew he needed them. Talon and Aoren might well have come if she had asked, but she knew that Zalkyriax did not care for Arcas reborn, considering their history, but they had a great deal on their plates. Not to mention the fact that Arcas had been the one to cut the Horn from Avaerys in the first place and started all of this. There was Aurin, whose Traversion skills had been amazing, and she had seen him in action when they had gone into the Mines together to rescue the miners... but she knew part of what he did was buying and selling information, and this was sensitive information. He might keep a lid on it for her... and then again, he might not. She didn't want to put him into a position where they might well decide to blank away some things from him to ensure his silence. She liked and trusted Kala, who was a decidedly capable Mage, but she was also an extremely busy woman, and Founders knew there had been Complicated Feelings following the dinner party in Frost. She hadn't come this far and spent this much time tracking this legendary artifact down across the continent to shoot herself in the foot by digging up something that had been more or less been left to lie for a few seasons. Beyond that, she had some level of connection with the royals of Sol'Valen, and while she trusted Kala to keep things to herself... allowing a hand to be tipped that way, even unintentionally, wouldn't have been wise.

Each of her foreign friends had their own responsibilities and duties to their sovereign, just as she had to hers. She knew she was assessed when she came back, and not sharing critical information with the crown would have been tantamount to treason, and something of this magnitude definitely would have been considered critical. There was no need to put them in that position. While she had been told that she could invite anyone on this venture that she chose, she also knew it would reflect on her later, for better or for worse. This had been kept under wraps for a very long time, and it was best to keep it that way until it was done.

Kor had volunteered to look after the animals and Kalor so that Lia could come with her, and considering Lia was more aware of these details about what was going on than he was... and Hilana knew she would have her back. Kalor would be perfectly fine with Kor, and would surely enjoy a change of pace. The two Vastian women made their way to the Praetorium in the Umbrium, side by side. They'd packed enough for a week, and between rucksacks and featherlight satchels, they would surely manage. Hilana had brought her medical supplies and restoratives, Lia carried the bulk of their lodestones that they had spent the last month filling and preparing to be on the safe side. They'd surely use them somewhere, and in any event, they would not go bad.

They greeted the Sentinels, and were ushered down a hallway and through a portal to take them to the Callidus Victoris, and Lia let out a low sound of awe and surprise. Sviras remained incorporeal in her rucksack, where Tiaz might have stayed, and Etzalal coiled around Hilana's shoulders, tongue flickering and wings tucked against their body. "Wait until you see the inside," Hilana murmured to her sister, squaring her shoulders and taking a deep breath. This was it. Hopefully. They were back on the trail of Israxa, and they would see what there was to be found on Insula Celatium.

The Callidus Victoris was situated in the open sands overlooked by Arx Rubram Petram, built into its massive mesa under the light of the radiant sun. A crowd of figures stood in the shadow of the large airship- Engineers who'd worked on its construction, mages who'd contributed to its design, along with stevedores and crewpersons loading equipment onto its deck. Pacing between different pockets of labourers to offer orders, was Phocion, in a newly-minted uniform designed particularly for this provisional position as ship's captain. Less ornate versions were worn by those Sentinels clearly serving as the crew of The Callidus Victoris.

"Those ætherite shards need to go directly to Sentinel Valæra's Sembling Chamber and see that they are installed properly per her instruction. I want that mnemonosyte accelerator brought to the-..." Phocion paused as he caught the eye of the approaching Prince Vrædyn, his scowl turning into a smile. "Ah, perfect timing, Your Serene Highness!" He glanced back to the stevedore, "Conduct the cargo and the prince to his quarters aboardship, pray."

"A typical Umbrian greeting, coz... cool and dim. Do I not warrant a wisp of warmth, Serene Highness?" He smirked as he squeezed Phocion's arm, "I am in jest. I'll not stifle your captaincy with my whimsy. Visit my quarters when you've a moment, though?" He leaned a bit closer before releasing his arm and gesturing for the stevedore to lead him up the ramp onto the vessel. A bit flustered, Phocion turned to take stock of where his attention was next required and took note of Hilana and her voidborn sister.

"Ah, good, you're here. We will be ready to depart within the hour. His Exalted Highness arrived earlier, but quickly repaired to his private quarters with his maritus as soon as he portalled in from the Commonweal. I've not yet seen Raithen, but I believe all the other major players are on site awaiting lift-off. When the ship is fully stocked and the launch zone has been cleared, I shall gather everyone in the galley so you can brief us on your intentions. A buffet breakfast is laid out in there now, if you'd care to eat or fraternise ere we launch. Sentinel Charon, please conduct the Chenziras to their cabins."

The original plan had been to spend some time with his family, but given they were leaving so soon after a senatorial convocation in Drathera and a summary demand by his husband for a command performance, he would have to carve out some time for gens Viator on the other end of this trip.

Given Raithen's presence had been requested, he brought his brother-in-law along to the Citadel, but first ushered Arkænyn and Lystreia into the Prædium Sorokys so they could enjoy some time in Solunarium among their people rather than the Orkhan. Of course, Arkænyn knew he was flying into danger, so he wouldn't put it past his sworn knight to show up on the airship once their flight was underway. Finn hadn't ordered him to stay behind.

He didn't bring Raithen into the bedroom with Arvælyn, of course. He wanted the dragon prince all to himself.

A part of him didn't want Arvælyn on this journey, would prefer him out of harm's way. The Zonam Mysterium had been a risk, and he didn't like risking the love of his life. Of course, he understood that at least part of the crown prince's acceptance was to keep him alive and intact. They lingered in each other's embrace as long as they dared, but he was eager to get aboard and go through the equipment assigned to him. It wasn't that he didn't trust it would all be correct; it was just his habit to do some things for himself—better redundant than dead.

As they approached, he saw Vrædyn precede them. From where he stood, the moonborn Pontifex was a likely successor to his grandmother as he had been the heir apparent before Arkænyn appeared, and was the firstborn of she who shan't be named's firstborn. On the one hand, he genuinely liked his fellow Radiant, and thought it would be a good thing if a Luxian king and a certain Silver Sentinel worked like, ahem, hand in glove. He didn't know if Cithæra would agree, though, dividing Phocion's loyalties. And a part of him balked at the idea of Vrædyn rising in power; he had too, but he didn't know that his Power could outpace Vrædyn's if he sat the Luxian throne.

Of course, there were other principes who might make great leaders. He thought Octavian might as well, and had that prized platinum complexion. But he was quite young, and Arkænyn might have soured the powers that be with regard to the race to come.

In any event, his veil was down, but he was wearing his blacks when he came into Phocion's presence and so he reacted like a Vigil and not a Dux. He saluted properly.

"Sentinel."

When they saw Vraedyn Princeps ahead of them, the sisters slowed to hang back a respectful distance and wait. It would not do to rush up, nor forget their place among such lofty figures here. This may have been her quest, and this foray may have been stacked in her favour with the best talent and resources they could provide, but one wrong step, one slip and she was going to slide right down to the bottom of that pyramid. And she hadn't come this far to do so. Still, she was glad to have the brain-melters on her side.

When the stevedore led Vraedyn aboard, Hilana and Lia approached the Captain of the ship, and both of them bowed to him. "Your Serene Highness. Captain," the sisters Chenzira straightened, listening as they were given the rundown of what was going on so far. All was underway with readiness, it seemed. There was no such thing as overkill right now, or being over-prepared - she might hope that diplomacy would be successful, given what she had learned from the Neptori... she didn't want any of her companions to lose their lives here. Even if it was a sacrifice they may make for the Founders in pursuit of Their goals... it was one that any of those gathered here would make. She just had to hope that any sacrifices came from those who might oppose them and their presence on Insula Celatium.

She was sure Raithen would show up; they had some time before they would depart. He had told her he would come, and even if he had taken off to the western area of the continent to stay with Finn and get away from everything, she did expect he would keep his word. He would be there. Otherwise, he would have been the only one of Cithaera Princeps' children to be missing from this event. He would be here. "Gratias, Captain," Hilana bowed her head and shoulders before him again, and Lia did as well, though her own bow deeper than her taller sister.

They would follow Sentinel Charon in, the two serpentine spirits hanging out with closely. Sviras observed all of the activity quietly, where Etzalal wanted to investigate the airship and everyone on it. "No sparks yet," she drew the metallic winged spirit back to her, and a forked tongue flickered. On board, their packs and satchels were tucked in their quarters for the time being. The navigators already knew where they were going, they had the coordinates, that wasn't something she could help with there. While they'd had something to eat before they set off, considering they both knew there was no point in this on an empty stomach, a breakfast buffet was certainly welcome. They could get something to eat, and she could think about what she wanted to say to those assembled when the time came.

She was just going to have to get a firm grip on the winged snake before he could dive bomb into the buffet...

“Just captain, please. His Serene Highness of Vlahos was merely being cheeky by using my princely title. I am a Sentinel here.” Phocion demurred, at the sisters’ bow.

“I will see you anon within.” He inclined his head to the pair, and turned away to chastise a clumsy servus and get the Vastian back on track, as Finn approached.

“Sentinel. What are you doing back out here? I thought His Exalted Highness was occupying you in your quarters aboardship? I am just finishing up out here and then I’ll be in to gather the banners in the galley for our mission commander’s address. If you’ll excuse me… Bantius! Get someone to help you with that! Don’t be a martyr.”

By and by, all those compelled to join the campaign had arrived. Arkænyn did not invite himself, perhaps content that Finn’s safety was well-in-hand with so many powerful luminaries of the realm close at hand, but Raithen did make his way up the gangplank before it was raised.

The bulk of those gathered were already in the galley, but some were seeing to their lodging or preparing their work stations when a sensation flooded across all of them that it was time to congregate in the galley. Warded or no, all would feel this gentle summons, though none were compelled by the tinge to their Symphonies.

Phocion paced to the centre of the crowd and raised his voice:

“Magnati Solunarii et Custodes Regni, I thank you for your punctual arrival. We are on schedule to depart shortly, but those of you without immediate duties to attend are invited to enjoy the refreshments as I invite our mission commander, Domina Hilana, to address you in preparation for what is to come. Please give her your attention.” Phocion gestured toward Hilana and stepped behind her to stand sentry, with his hands clasped behind his back.

Finn was tempted to riposte with: "If we have one more round, one or both of us will likely be unable to walk." He wasn't sure how that would fly with Phocion, however, and so he merely greeted Raithen and made his way to where the debriefing would ensue. He sidled up next to his husband. If the meeting was a brief respite from their conjugal visit, so be it. At least he could be near the man as much as possible without making a thing of it.

He waited with a faint smile for her address. There was little else for him to do given how efficiently the Sentinels worked.

Hilana was no Mesmer. She had no real training in public speaking, and while she had a light breakfast with her sister, she considered what all she would say. She was used to talking all day and all night to people, and would usually talk someone's head off if given the opportunity, but this was different. Lia took her glass for her as Phocion mentioned her name, and she made her way towards him, steeling herself internally.

"Thank you, Captain," she smiled at Phocion. The silver steward that had conducted her and Arvaelyn down into the depths of the Thalamum Draconum to treat with the Crownwyrm, now captained the ship that would take them on what might be possibly the final leg of this quest. Then again, it might end with them finding another clue and Hilana needing to do more research... She wouldn't be surprised if it was. His ancestor was definitely the child of twists and turns.

"I would like to thank you all for coming," Hilana began. "I will try to keep this short, though those who are familiar with me know that that's probably asking for more miracles from the Founders than we have any right to expect in this age," she smiled at those assembled. "Today marks the first venture of the Callidus Victoris, and we are setting out to find an ancient artifact that was believed to be lost to time at the behest of the Founders Themselves, one that was once used by His Divine Radiance, and was stolen from him at the Battle of the Rending. The Zalkyrian Horn."

She didn't know just how much the crew knew, her friends certainly did, but it was in the open now. Those that were here were those that were trusted. It was time. "If we are successful today, we may restore a great power that has been lost to Solunarium since the dragons retreated to the mountains. I will say that we do not know what we will find at our destination. We must be on our guard and prepared for any and all eventualities, but this is why you are here." Solemn brown eyes swept the crowd. "You are here as the best of the best, with the skills and training to overcome those that would stand in our way in this divine task. It is Their Will that we seek to enact," she still remembered Cithaera's words in the Temple of Midnight's Mother. "And we will, however we must, despite whatever and whomever stands in our way. Let's get it done. Pro Deus et Domina! Excelsior!"

Arvælyn smiled to Finn, sneaking a squeeze of his hand as he sidled up, but making no overt displays of affection in this public and somewhat formal setting.

The galley fell totally silent as Hilana stepped forward. Even the clinking of dishware ceased as a hush fell over the deck and those assembled looked on with rapt attention.

A few scattered chuckles burst from those who knew Hilana well enough to get her self-deprecating joke about her notorious verbosity. She might note that the heartiest snigger came from over her shoulder, where Phocion covered his mouth before regaining the composure to maintain his typical stony expression.

When her oration was complete, many voices immediately echoed her cry of:

"Excelsior!" And most of those who did not do so immediately, did so a beat later as hands rose in aves to the Gods she invoked. The ensuing cheers lasted until Phocion raised a fist and all of the Vigilia present fell instantly silent, as those less attuned to their ways would taper off their enthusiasm upon recognising the swell had crested and was on the ebb.

"All crew prepare for departure. Domina Hilana, Your Exalted Highness and Sentinel Finn, please join me on the bridge." He offered a curt nod to Prince Vrædyn, who smirked as he bowed lower than custom demanded as if to tease his stoic moonborn counterpart. He turned to engage Raithen in conversation as the Avialæ surfeited on the breakfast offerings with a Hunger that doubtless pleased The Deus Imperator.

Arvælyn sauntered to the rear of the group, lest his wings obscure the path of the others through the corridors of the ship. Once they'd reached the bridge, Phocion turned to Finn.

"Sentinel Finn, I trust Domina Hilana has briefed you somewhat on the functions of The Callidus Victoris, but to refresh you: The vessel is built to be operated by mages who tap into her 'Arcane Array'. We have multiple chambers aboardship which are attuned to different magical disciplines and enhance the Runic abilities of their operators through carefully crafted dragonshard apparatuses. Once we have lifted off, I thought you might be interested in accelerating our journey by tapping into the Arcane Array through our Traversion Chamber? The systems are intuitive and the slipspace to Insula Vrontium has already been charted. From there, we will fly via Kinetic Impulse to Insula Celatium." He paused, glancing to Hilana.

"Unless our Mission Commander has any objection?"

Finn's smile for his husband wasn't so very different as the smiles he got back in Kalzasi when they were collaborating on music, only now there were years of shared experience adding context to those smiles.

His own voice was raised in reverence to the Founders. As ever, he felt Aværys' attention when he named him; it was a function of the emblem, he supposed. He took in the symphonies around him, the fervor, and sent it all along the connection between him and his God, the better for it to sate his Hunger, if only for a moment.

His voice fell out where he felt the natural cadence, just before Phocion's call to order. He nodded, and walked at his husband's side from there to the bridge.

When further orders were given in the form of an offer, he acknowledged with a crisp "Ita, Vigilia."

But while he was entirely correct publicly, he let a mischievous curl of his soul's music edge toward Arvælyn's. Warded against such things, he knew the crown prince would still feel it and could invite it into himself. Then, of course, he could roll his eyes at his husband's sudden inspiration and an invitation to follow him to this Traversion Chamber in order to join what he was calling The Mile-High Club, at least until he had a better name for it.

Finn might be covered up with black steel, black leather, and black linen; it wasn't his fault Arvælyn was dressed the way he was.

If Hilana did have an objection, he would stay until it was resolved. Otherwise, he would turn to do as Phocion bade him do.

That Phocion got a good chuckle out of her comment was of no surprise to her - Her speech seemed to go over well, much to her relief, and when everyone quieted, she stepped aside to demur to Phocion as Captain. "Of course," she nodded at his request, and Hilana was content to follow along behind him, the winged spirit weaving around the group of them as they headed for the bridge. Had this been a different time, she might well have remarked on Arvaelyn's attire and how well it fitted him. It seemed rather curious about Arvaelyn's wings, fluffing the feathers out on their own as they inspected at a distance. Hilana didn't want her little winged snake getting on the Dragonborn Prince's bad side before they'd even launched the airship. Lia would finish her breakfast and head back to her quarters to await her sister's return or until they were summoned once again. Until it was time, she would stay out of the way.

She rather thought that Vraedyn was keen to try to get Phocion's goat today, though she just figured it was the way the two of them were carrying on. It was good that he was in good humour, at least - the last thing she wanted was a Re'hyaean of his ability in a foul mood on this venture. She was glad to see Raithen's appetite had returned, and the Dux didn't look the worse for wear from his time in Ecith with Finn. She smiled at him as they passed, but any small talk would have to wait. They might not get the opportunity today, and if it didn't happen, it didn't happen. She knew things had changed since that dinner in Frost, but he would either get over it or he wouldn't. If he subconsciously blamed her for it, there wasn't anything she could do about it, especially when he was intent on avoiding her.

Sensitive birds, those Avialae.

Her hands folded in front of her as she listened to the Moonborn's address, nodding along. Finn may not have had the opportunity to practice with the Array, but he was considered a Magnatus with his masteries, and she knew his ability with Traversion would get the job done. She remembered from her own time in the chamber with the Arcane Array that the instructions were instinctive, that she had known just how to use it when she had stepped in and got situated. "I see no problems with that course of action, Captain. We can proceed. Have fun with the Arcane Array," she smiled at Finn.
