Personality

Nikaia is quiet, observational, and to some, aloof. She prefers to listen, eavesdrop, and think rather than letting anyone know more than she thinks they should know. This doesn't mean she has no sense of humor, and some of her rare words in casual conversation are saved for witty retorts. She is polite, but not weak, and incredibly stubborn - once she has an idea of what she wants, she pursues it relentlessly. It is her predilection for listening that has allowed her to successfully run a fortune-telling business, and she often considers herself to have a small finger on the pulse on Kalzasi, with much context to go with gossip and rumors. Those who come to her know their secrets are going to be kept, but she makes no guarantees that she won't use what she knows to further pursue her goals. Nikaia is a very hard worker, if a bit sensitive to criticism. She strives to learn and perfect her interests and skills. She is also particularly prideful and will not let insults or pettiness slide.

Appearance

Luminous purple eyes and long white hair are key attributes of her Siltori heritage, though her nose, tusks, and the green tint to her ashen skin do more than just suggest otherwise. It is more obvious at first glance that she is Orkhan than Siltori, though the half-elf, half-ork takes pride in both of her bloodlines. A large, dark birthmark covers much of the right side of her face, and she does not attempt to hide this, either, taking some pride in her unique appearance. She dresses in simple, layered Kalzasi clothing, usually tying her long sleeves up with cords. She is an average height and weight at 6'2 and 150lbs for both Orkhan and Siltori, and is slim for an Orkhan, carrying a more Siltori build. Her hands are soft and have few blemishes, befitting her low-impact line of work. Nikaia has no tattoos to speak of - other than the swirls of her Semblance rune, centered on her chest and curling around her shoulders and forearms. Her ears are pierced and usually dangling with tassel earrings as well as gold industrial piercings. Her hair, too, is usually pinned back, a small bun holding the hair around the edges of her face while the rest of it dangles down.

History

Orkhan have a long, storied history in Kalzasi, and Nikaia's birth is but a speck of dust on the tapestry. Born to an absent Siltori father and a doting Orkhan mother who claimed she could trace her lineage to the very first miners of Kalzasi, the half-Ork has always felt a deep connection to the city and its people. Her mother, like her mother, and her mother before her all followed in the footsteps of Galetira, a family tradition that stemmed from the demigod's influence in Ecith. Being raised in a family of scholars of the occult and fortune-tellers, she was being taught to read the lines of palms, the stories in delicately painted cards, and the histories written in the stars - all before she could even read a book.

Even as a pre-teen, she found that she was particularly skilled at frivolous fortunes like love and romance. While she was not entirely accurate, she had the empathy to tell when to give someone a fortune they wanted to hear versus a fortune they needed to hear. Nikaia rarely ended with an upset querent. A tribute to her Siltori heritage, when her grandmother inscribed the Cardinal Rune of Semblance upon her chest it swirled around her shoulders and forearms before thrusting her into Threshold Sickness. She was not alone in this endeavor, because just as fortune-telling was a family tradition, so too was this magic, so often used to enhance their readings. After two days of intense hallucinations and visions, her fever broke.

Nikaia was twenty-one when her world fractured. Having grown up with her grandmother and her mother, and having worked as an assistant in their fortune-telling shop for as long as she could remember, the fire that tore through the dusty tomes, extravagant tapestries, and the bodies of her two favorite people came as a total surprise. Suddenly the stressors of being alive were thrust onto her shoulders, and it was up to her to deal with the bones and ashes. Left with a small lump sum as an inheritance from her mother, she made it her goal to rebuild their business, better than ever. With little time to grieve, Nikaia found herself taking out a loan and purchasing an empty building, using the second story as her home. She wasted no time in furnishing her new shop, Fate & Fortune, and opened for business half a season after it was purchased. Nikaia now relies on the lessons she learned from her family, daily prayer to Galetira, and the single-minded stubbornness to continue her tradition to get by.
