Hilana pinned her long hair up in a bun and tied it off before she washed her hands and started gathering up the ingredients. Her cookbook was set up on the stand on the counter, and she had found the recipe that she wanted - blackcurrant and rose cakes. This was one of her paternal grandmother's recipes, and she hadn't had it in quite some time... but she thought it would be something different to make to take up north when she and Lia went to Kalzasi for dinner. She did like introducing Telion to these flavours that Rickter had come to love as Lykos, and sharing her culture was important to her.
With the collection of jars and bottles lined up on the counter, Hilana began to cut up and weigh the goat's milk butter before putting it in a larger pan and turning up the heat. The oven itself was also set to preheat while she got the basic work prepared to let it come up to temperature. Sugar that had been mixed with molasses went in next, and it was followed by some of the honey that had been collected from the hives in the citrus orchards. For Hilana, it was all about layering those flavours - where the honey was sourced could impact the taste, and considering there would be orange zest going in the cake batter later... with the honey and sugar dissolved in the melted butter, Hilana pulled it off of the heat and added the milk and the rose syrup and stirred it all together until it was smooth. She moved the pan to a trivet on the table to let it cool, and turned her attention to the dry ingredients.
She had considered using the geothrix wheat that grew underground, but decided to stick with a more traditional variety in order to not change the texture of the cake too much from what her grandmother had come up with before.
