Diversity At and Around the Table

In which Hilana hosts a dinner party for guests both foreign and local.

The Luxium represents the upper half and primary seat of the Solunarian Capital and one of the dual-cities that comprises Solunarium Proper. Situated between the foot of the volcanic Mount Sorokyn and the wide River Vasta, this above-ground metropolis boasts five thriving districts beneath the shadow of the glorious Palatium Furiarum (The Blazing Palace) from which the Solar Court rules in splendour. This bustling metropolis is by far the most populous region in the realm and, along with its shadowy sister-city the Umbrium, houses upwards of eighty percent of the Solunarian population at any given time. During the reign of a Solar Court, every major government agency in the kingdom is headquartered in the Luxium, with the notable exception of The Silver Sentinels, the covert intelligence agency run by the House of Phaedryn-Sol’Aværys.

25 Frost, Year 124

[Closed - Pharaoh, Kala, and Raithen]

While her two-bedroom had been perfectly adequate for Hilana and her snake collection, it meant that her sister didn't have a bedroom of her own. When another apartment opened up on the same floor, they had seized the opportunity to put Lia in next door. They each had a key to the other's apartment, and they shared many meals together, but this gave them the chance to have space or company as they desired without constantly being in the other's orbit when they might have wanted a bit of downtime - and Lia did not need to be around three dozen venomous reptiles of various species and sizes, and more plants of various types, colours, and origins than the average layperson understood... which was the sort of aesthetic, if one could call it that, they someone might expect out of the botanist.

She knew that Kala and her retinue were in Solunarium, and as such, she had invited Kala and Kaus over to dinner with Raithen. Hilana had remembered that her Lux had spent a considerable amount of time there, and thought that perhaps he might enjoy coming over as well. She had also included Phocion in the invitation with Kala and Kaus - she didn't know if he would take her up on it, but he had come with them to the Elemental Plane of Wood and it had gone well, as far as she was concerned, and considering the positions of the foreign luminaries, he might want to make sure that the colourful Vastiana didn't embarrass the homeland.

But for all of the knickknacks and collected odds and bobs, the dozens (possibly one hundred, but who counted?) pots of plants were on window ledges, shelves, and hanging from the ceiling, the place was neat and tidy, with brightly woven rugs and shelves of books that she had been reading or collecting over her studies. Her notebooks from those lessons were neatly stacked in order so that she could refer back to them when she needed them. The terrariums of her pythons and tegu were against the wall, while the room that held the more unnerving serpents had its door closed.

Her long hair was bound up in a rather full bun, and her blue skirts sported flowers that had been painted on, contrasting with the white sleeveless shirt that covered up far more of herself than she usually did. The three cats, including the two long-haired green siblings and the older, and wiser, Risdra, were ranging around the kitchen. They had been quite curious considering the meal that Hilana had been working on - she liked to make a lot of food to make sure that everyone had plenty, and where she could loved to introduce her foreign friends to dishes and tastes they may not have been used to. The three course meal included local specialties and nomadic-inspired dishes that were true to her heritage, while trying to keep in mind her guests and their tastes. Tiaz was sunning himself in the light of the window on a wooden stand, and Fiya was settled on her shoulders. The final touches to her menu were being completed and the drinks were waiting, either in the cold box for the Luxian white wine and Vasilei's mead, or on the counter for the bottles of the Umbrian red wine. She had some harder liquors, from the smaller distilleries, so hopefully she could match everyone's tastes and preferences tonight.

Now it was just the waiting, and hopefully, all would go well.

When he’d first taken note of the invitation, Phocion had only marked the date and the sender and assumed it was for a meeting pertinent to the epic quest upon which Hilana had been set by the Crown. Thinking he would be attending in his function as a Sentinel, he thought little of it, until a servus inquired about what he’d like to wear to the gathering.

“Why my blacks of course. Why wouldn’t I… Let me see the invitation.” It was produced and he reviewed it with greater scrutiny.

“Oh, fæx.” He’d already committed.

“The Lady Kala is also on the guest list…” The servus observed.

“So she is. Fine. The Corvinus garment, then. The lustrous white one I got for the Sælyan funerals.” Phocion answered, at last. “And see whether Her Ladyship is keen to meet here for a cocktail before we attend.”

A few moments after the soirée was set to begin, a knock would sound at Hilana’s door and she would be greeted by a veiled Sentinel of average height and with no other discernible features.

They stepped into the apartment and inclined their head to the hostess.

“I presage the coming of His Serene Highness Phocion Princeps of Gens Phædryn-Sol’Aværys, the Lady Kala of the peregrine House of Leukos and Master Kaus, of that same line.” With no further pomp, the Sentinel conjured a portal.

Phocion, rarely seen in such radiant regalia outside of very formal very public ceremonies, stepped into the room with Kala on his arm. Perhaps the plume of white feathers that protruded from his collar was a nod to the Avialæ in his company or a reference to avian ostentation. He might have disappeared into it, if not for the starkness of the kohl lining his pale eyes.

Between the magical resources at Phocion's disposal and the Traveler bound to her by oaths and faith, it was easy as anything for Kala and her twin to visit Solunarium. Thankfully, there was no rush toward any sort of commitment where marriage was concerned; elves were long-lived and she might live longer yet if she was careful. In any case, she found more and more cause to visit diplomatically as the Minister of Finance's age continued to show. That she was then available for the odd bit of quality time spent with a prospective suitor was convenient.

Having met Hilana at the Citadel, she knew her to be trustworthy where secrets that touched upon her or the Custodes Deorum were concerned. She had offered the woman her hospitality should she ever require it during one of her visits to Kalzasi, and she was aware that Hilana had befriended Torin's business partner as well. She was pleased to be invited to something informal, of course, and when she and Phocion compared schedules, this aligned nicely.

Their conversation en route was pleasant. She had begun to bring him bits of scholarship from Silfanore, either copies of great tomes and scrolls in their various libraries and archives, or even cleverly copied first-hand accounts etched in memory shards.

She even wore a gown from Silfanore. Akantha had helped her work on the concept with one of her pet couturiers, and she did think it went rather well as a foil to Phocion's white. She wore black, form-fitting, but ornamented with cut silk and feathers, onyx beading. She had worn more feathers before she had wings of her own, and was, apparently, bringing them back. Thankfully, it was light and the Maker had woven threads of elemental aether through it such that she found it quite difficult to overheat in it, even in the desert.

Kaus was in something much more Solunarium-coded. On one past visit, Raithen had taken him to one of the artisans who made his clothes. Kaus covered more skin than did Phocion's feathered brother, but a practiced eye might note the signature of the hand that made it.

The Silver Wings were left behind tonight, having their fun in Solunarium; she only hoped Aito didn't get into trouble.

Raithen thought little of it when Hilana had first mentioned him coming to her house for a dinner with friends. He came often, with and without invitation, and ate with whoever was around. When a servi showed up with an official invitation and he saw the guest list, small but excellent to his tastes, he was more inclined than ever. Without thinking much about it beyond that it would amuse, he pulled out one of the outfits he'd bought when visiting Starfall, donning it for the evening.

When he arrived, a few moments before the others, directly into the host's bedroom, he spun around for her inspection,

"What do you think? Do I look like Kaus?" The two were of a size and almost of a coloring with each other, they might have been cousins to an unknowing eye.

The knock at the door paused further conversation and he lingered while the Sentinel announced the arrival of the remaining guests, giving Hilana time to greet them each before drawing any attention to himself. When the initial greetings were all made, he stepped entered the room at an angle to be seen by the male twin first, striking a little pose before seeing Kaus' clothes and having to choke back a laugh at how they had inadvertently aped each other. When more attention was cast his way he bowed, much less formally than he would have elsewhere, and came forward to greet each with a brief kiss on the mouth. It was a familiar greeting for family or close friends and he thought it correct since everyone there was one or both.

Despite the fact that this was an intimate setting, not a court function, his brain began collecting details and processing them away for later. Perhaps there would be a day in which he could stand in the presence of friends of rank without this, but it was not that day. One of the reasons he so enjoyed the company of those of common birth is that he could enjoy it without trying to memorize anything his mother might want to know.

Something was off about the small company, or changed, from the last time he had seen his brother with the twins, but it was nothing immediately discernable and this gathering was not a political one... right?

Hilana smiled at Raithen when he appeared, looking him over. "Very much so, Lux. It suits you," she touched the fabric, smoothing it with her fingers, before standing on tiptoe to claim a kiss from him. It was in some ways funny to see him more covered than he usually was, but at the same time, she didn't mind at all. She'd chosen to do the same with her shirt; there was usually quite a bit more skin on display. "You two could definitely be related, I think." Tiaz started to stretch towards Raithen, recognizing one of his favourite warmers, but the decidedly lazy python wasn't about to completely leave his tree or move too much if the Avialae didn't go over to him. He would wait - Mama would surely put him on his shoulders at some point. He was patient.

She opened the door for the Sentinel, stepping back to let them in. "Gratias," she thanked them, and cleared the way further to allow room for the new arrivals to come through. "Salve, come on in," she was beaming. Had Kala not been on Phocion's arm, she might well have offered her a hug, so she settled for inclining her head and shoulders in a small bow. "I am glad that you could come. How have you all been?" She'd claim hugs from Kala and Kaus later, and she knew beyond any level of doubt that if she tried it on Phocion, she would bounce right off a kinetic barrier. She hadn't expected Phocion to actually follow through, so this was a nice surprise entirely. She noted that Kaus was dressed in Raithen's usual style, with some additions, and she found herself grinning as she looked back over her shoulder at the Solunarian Avialae, and then back to Kaus.

They definitely could have been related.

Two green, long-haired cats were coming to inspect the newcomers, while the larger, tan and spotted cat was somewhat more reserved. Risdra had learned from Aoren that winged strangers might well have treats, and she was going to see if Kaus might provide them with her more youthful pridemates before she got too close. "Can I get you anything to drink?" She would lead the way into the kitchen, where the rectangular wooden table was set for five. "Red and white wines, peach, plum, and regular mead, and I've some other stronger liquors if those are to your tastes." The scents of spice and cooked food were quite a bit stronger in here, but with the way the apartment was designed, Hilana did not have a separate dining room. Tiaz reached for Raithen once again, tongue flickering as he sorted the new arrivals.

She had left it fairly open for the table on if Phocion would sit with Kala and Raithen with Kaus, or if the two sets of siblings would prefer to be sitting side by side. "Are you and the others staying at the Citadel, or in the Umbrium this time?" Hilana inquired of the Leukos twins. That way she knew where to go with tea and some cookies she had been working on.

Phocion canted a brow at the presence of Raithen, whose company he had not anticipated in this gathering. He probably ought to have, though, knowing that his brother fraternised with the Vastiana and had accompanied her on legs of her quest to boot. He released Kala's arm, more to give her freedom to move about the room now that they were through the portal than anything else.

His lips were already pursed, akin to a pucker, when Raithen stepped in to kiss them, though they remained taut and no smooching noise would emit from them. That noise vexed him, so he would not inflict it upon others.

The princeps would allow the others to respond to their hostess' salutatory query, before offering a perfunctory:

"I have been well." He paused, "And I will take something strong. A dry brandy, if you have it." He clasped his hands behind his stiff, straight back as his fair eyes scanned the environs appraisingly. He had never visited Hilana in any of her residences, and was curious as to her style of decor. He was not surprised to find signs of her menagerie in plain sight.

Beyond that, he stood by, thus far, as a passive observer. The gathering was too small for him to flower the walls anonymously as he might have preferred, but he did not force himself to engage in idle small talk for the sake of the others. If people were curious as to his thoughts, they were welcome to ask. None here were not savvy to how he operated, so that should come as no surprise to any of them.

"Salve et gratias, hospita," Kala greeted the hostess first, of course, and Kaus followed, offering her a hostess gift: a bottle of Spirit of the Mountain '17. They both greeted Raithan next, the tender tendrils of Avialae bond between them and the dux resonating like harp strings with the nearness of him. Kala was more restrained than her brother, but that was almost always the case.

Still, she smiled, happy to see him. And Kaus' cheeks were pink with laughter that he and Raithen looked rather as though they were in each other's drag. But he ducked down to offer his knuckles to the nearest feline to sniff at and decide about him.

"I believe we have been thoroughly vetted at this point and have been guests at the Palatium," she added. That certainly made meeting with trade ministers more convenient for her, as well as for socializing. At Phocion's order, she considered him, then turned back to Hilana. "I will have the same, please."

Meanwhile, from his crouch, Kaus' mind had taken a few words from Hilana and connecting them with lyrics from something Finn had performed from a concert harp the last time they visited.

"Now it's done; watch it go.
You've changed some.
Water runs from the snow.
Am I so dear? Do I run rare?
And you've changed some.
Peach, plum, pear.

"Oh, hm... I will have the same."

Kala didn't spy, but she did open her arcane senses to what was going on around here. Hilana's home was full of interesting magical signatures. Both twins sensing a tremor of confusion from Raithen, their smiles didn't falter; their own emotions resonated: pleasure to see him, and certainly more than pleasure from Kaus.

Here, at least, the foremost Avialae in the realm looked much like he did and so here, at least, Kaus didn't feel like a miniature version of a man. Kala remained tiny, but she had always had more of a presence than he did, size difference notwithstanding.

Raithen made no sound in his kissing, having not been raised in a family where overt displays of either affection or silliness had been tolerated.

He appraised Kaus' outfit approvingly, sharing his amusement both through their bond and aloud with laughter as they greeted one another. Kala's attire was unusual, at least for her to wear in his presence. She tended to favor lighter colors, and the dark cloth and feathers fully covering her form almost seemed to wash her out. Just as the unexpected white on Phocion seemed to light him, making him seem far more exposed than was natural. There was something about the opposite yet matching costumes, something about their arrival together in a way that was distinct from Kaus' arrival with them, that itched at Raithen's mind.

"You know what I like, Umbra." He answered the question of refreshment when the others had. He was a guest, but felt less like one than any of them, so was happy to be seen to last.

When Kaus crouched down to attract feline attention, Raithen sent a tiny nudge of a joke through their bond, a hint of a sexual innuendo at the relative position of Kaus' face.

When drinks had been passed and pets had been petted, he asked Hilana,

"Is there more reason for this gathering than jollity? Have you another fate-shaking quest from Their Divinities? Have you discovered another lost civilization? Are we to be invited to a wild desert ritual?"

"Thank you so much," Hilana accepted the wine bottle, smiling at it and thoroughly pleased. This would be a treat to enjoy later on. Dry brandy she had on hand. Her father was ever interested in new moneymaking ventures, and different types of liquor were a way to make money hand over fist, especially in Solunarium... but with his merchant network that stretched beyond the Kingdom's boundaries, there were plenty of opportunities. Grappa was one of them - wineries practically gave away the remains of their grapes once they had been pressed out, and Lebaoth was able to offer a little money and have workers haul it away so that it was less work for the wineries and vintners to deal with. Low cost, ample supply of pomace was just begging to have something done with it, and so he did. "That must be lovely, staying at the Palatium. Easier to explore the city from there, too."

Brandies were best in stemmed glasses, she knew from observing and listening, and that would allow the flavour to open up. Those ended up being was what the amber-coloured liquid was poured into. The glasses were tulip-shaped with fairly short stems, and each stem had a different colour to it so people could track whose glass was whose. Three of the aged, dry brandies were served up. and Raithen got a cup of mezcal. She poured herself the same, as the larger, spotted cat left her spot to go and sit solemnly beside Phocion. Didn't touch him, but simply sat beside him to observe the others. One of the green cats took the opportunity to investigate Kala while her sister followed after Kaus. Tiaz was somewhat satisfied by pets, resting his head on Raithen's hand while he had the opportunity.

Kala may have sensed a rather large snake spirit roaming around the apartment. Sviras had chosen to remain incorporeal for the time being, but where the pythons were content on Hilana or on their perch, he made his way along the furniture and was coming towards the kitchen, drawn by the auras of those who had arrived, intrigued by her guests. Raithen he had seen more than once, and had been introduced to him since Hilana had returned from Kalzasi with him, but the other three were new and different. Kala's ability to sense things would likely find her magic map in her trusty rucksack by the door, and her featherlight satchel near it. Her grimoire, a gift from Talon and Aoren, was with her other books. The mask was hidden within one of the mamba's terrariums, secured in a box that was negated to protect it. "Not as such," she admitted to Raithen, not expecting him to mention her quests or connection to the Founders in front of foreign guests. She had never mentioned them herself, as she hadn't known how much they knew, either, and she had kept her task on the down-low. "I mean, I do have leftover spice from the last Frost Festival if you wanted a desert ritual," she grinned a bit impishly. "Though I will have more at the end of the season. I just thought it would be nice to make a dinner and catch up and see how everyone was doing. It's been some time since I had the opportunity to see Lord Kaus and Lady Kala." She needed to see if she might be able to make arrangements for the Plane of Metal, but she didn't want to vex her benefactors by delaying her quest and doing other things that were unnecessary...

Later. Once they were ready... and came back... then maybe she could get the rest of the Elemental Attunements.

The salads were dressed, and she lifted the waxed canvas off of a tray of grilled lamb chops before extending a palm to indicate the table. "Shall we start with our gustatio?" She might normally have just served mountains upon mountains of food, but she thought that Prince Phocion, who tended to be more stringent with his diet might appreciate a more structured and traditional approach of the three course meal. They would be beginning with a lightly-dressed fig and goat cheese salad, with sides of fresh-baked naans and spiced, grilled lamb chops. Raithen always had a massive appetite, she knew Kaus could pack it in if he was active, and this way, there was plenty to start with before getting into the main.

Phocion inclined his head in affirmation of Kala's assessment of her own vetting by the Vigilia Argenti. Though she'd been designated a dangerous entity, he had seen fit to ease the restrictions placed upon such figures and his sole superior in the Order, the Vigilia Magna, had not gainsaid him.

He arched a brow and tilted his head toward Hilana as his brother posed the question of the hour. Having mistaken the nature of the function himself due to an uncharacteristic oversight, he would have liked a bit more clarity than the invitation had offered and was glad it had been the less aloof of the two royals who'd put voice to the query. The response rendered by their hostess was no consolation, but the brandy was and he promptly lifted it just under his aquiline nose and took in a waft of its bouquet. He would not be the first to taste of the drinks, nor would he propose a toast to accelerate that outcome.

"Yes." He replied, as Hilana prompted them toward her table and looked to Kala before he led the way after Hilana. Upon reaching it, he hesitated as his eyes scanned for placards that might clarify an intended seating arrangement. He might have done the social calculus to ascertain where each guest would be expected to sit at a formal Re'hyæan function, but this was not a formal Re'hyæan household. He turned, instead, to their hostess.

"Did you have a seating arrangement in mind? Forgive me, if I am delinquent in my manners, but I am not clear on the etiquette of informal Vastian dinner culture." As he was typically avoidant of non-compulsory social outings since adulthood afforded him that luxury, it had been quite some time since he had graced anything remotely similar to this gathering. It seemed Kala was broadening his horizons somewhat, in that regard.
